Cougars women’s soccer celebrates 30 years of excellence

This year marks a monumental milestone for Mount Royal University's (MRU) women's soccer program, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Over three decades, the program has seen remarkable growth, both on and off the field, transitioning from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) to competing in the prestigious Canada West conference and U SPORTS. From humble beginnings to national accolades, the MRU women's soccer team has carved out a legacy of excellence, teamwork, and resilience.

The journey began in 1994-95 when the program was founded under the leadership of head coach Ian Fuge. Within two years, the team clinched its first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship in the 1995-96 season. This marked the beginning of a dominant era, with the Cougars winning multiple ACAC titles, including championships in 1996-97, 1998-99, and 2000-01, when Fuge was named both ACAC and CCAA Coach of the Year.

Key players such as Carla Tait, who earned the CCAA Player of the Year and ACAC Player of the Year honors in 1996-97, played a pivotal role in elevating the team's profile. The program's early success culminated in multiple national podium finishes, with the team securing CCAA bronze medals in 1996-97, 2001-02, and 2003-04, and a silver in 2004-05.

Former MRU standout Ashley Dixon, who played from 2006 to 2010, fondly recalls those formative years. "Winning our last game here to go to nationals was one of my favorite moments. It was a long game, going into overtime and shootouts, but we managed to pull it off, which was super nice," Dixon shared, reflecting on the camaraderie and determination that characterized the team during her time. Dixon herself earned numerous accolades, including ACAC Player of the Year and CCAA Player of the Year in 2008.

The program reached a significant turning point in the 2012-13 season when MRU transitioned from the ACAC to Canada West and U SPORTS, the highest level of university sports in Canada. This move was both a challenge and an opportunity for the women's soccer team, as they now faced stronger competition and needed to adapt quickly to the new league. Their first win in the U SPORTS league came on October 21, 2012 against the University of Winnipeg, a moment that signaled the team's potential in this more competitive environment.

Tino Fusco, who took over as head coach in 2009 and became the program's first full-time head coach in 2017, has been instrumental in guiding the team through this transition. Under his leadership, the Cougars have steadily built a reputation as a team capable of competing with the best in the conference. In 2022-23, the team finished first in the Prairie Division with 10 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie—a significant achievement in Canada West competition.

While the team has achieved success on the field, they have also excelled academically. Over the past 30 years, more than half of the team's players have been named Academic All-Canadians, a testament to their commitment to balancing rigorous academic schedules with athletic excellence. Current team captain Isabella Chirico, who is studying criminal justice, emphasized the importance of this balance in her interview. "Being a student-athlete is all about time management and managing your emotions. You have to be your best every day, not just in games, but also in academics," Chirico noted.

As captain, Chirico has embraced her leadership role, helping guide the younger players while fostering a strong sense of team unity. She spoke about the significance of hosting the Canada West quarterfinals in 2022, describing it as a pivotal moment for both her and the program. "That quarterfinal game against Thompson Rivers shifted our mindset. It showed that we're not just an underdog team, but a program heading in the right direction," she shared.

With a storied history of championships, standout players, and academic success, MRU's women's soccer program has much to celebrate as it looks ahead to its next chapter. Reflecting on the anniversary Chirico said, "It's inspiring to see how far the program has come, and it's exciting to think about where we can go from here. We have a young team, but we're moving in the right direction." The next 30 years promise to bring even more growth, success, and perhaps a few more championship banners to hang in the rafters.

Over the years, many talented players have come through the program, leaving a lasting impact on the team and the university. Alumni have gone on to successful careers in various fields, from coaching and sports management to education and business, and they continue to embody the values of hard work and resilience instilled during their time at MRU.

These alumni remain an important part of the program's legacy. Many former players stay involved with the team, offering mentorship and support to current student-athletes. Their contributions highlight the strong sense of community and connection that exists within the program, helping to inspire the next generation of players.

As the MRU women's soccer program celebrates its 30th anniversary, it remains focused on building for the future. With a strong foundation of success, both academically and athletically, the team is well-positioned to continue growing and competing at the highest levels of university sport.

The program's future is bright, with talented recruits joining the team each year and a renewed focus on player development. Fusco and his coaching staff are committed to maintaining the team's competitive edge while ensuring that players are supported in all aspects of their lives.

"Every season is an opportunity to grow and improve," says Fusco. "We're proud of what we've accomplished over the past 30 years, but we're always looking forward. We want to keep building on our successes and create even more opportunities for our players to thrive."

As the Cougars look ahead to the next chapter in their history, they remain grounded in the values that have guided them for three decades: hard work, resilience, and a commitment to excellence on and off the field. With a proud legacy behind them and an exciting future ahead, MRU women's soccer is poised to continue its tradition of success for years to come.

The Cougars will be holding a 30th season anniversary event on Friday, September 5th at 5:00 PM MT, as they take on the UNBC Timberwolves. At halftime, the Cougars will honour several former captains and their forever-lasting legacy at Mount Royal.
