Box Score The Mount Royal University men's hockey team hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night, marking the start of their last weekend of home games for the regular 2023-24 season.
The Cougars dominated the first period of the game.
Just over four minutes into the game,
Jaden Senkoe of MRU scored the opening goal with assists from
Clayton Hanus and
Robbie Fromm-Delorme.
Less than a minute later, MRU's
Clayton Hanus netted another goal, extending the Cougars' lead to 2 – 0 over the Huskies. Hanus received assists from
Connor Blake and
Spencer Moe.
Roughly over three minutes later, Ty Prefontaine of the Huskies received the first penalty of the game for tripping, granting the Cougars a two-minute power play advantage.
However, the Cougars were unable to capitalize on the given advantage.
With six minutes left in the period, Cougars
Clayton Hanus received a two-minute penalty for interference, giving the Huskies their first power play opportunity of the game.
However, the Cougars' defence proved effective in preventing any shots from finding their net.
With three minutes remaining in the period, the Cougars gave the Huskies another power play opportunity after
Kasey Hiemstra received a tripping penalty.
Once again, the Cougars' defence proved effective in withstanding the Huskies, even while being a player down.
The Cougars continued to extend their lead in the second period.
Three minutes into the period, Huskies Cole Jordan received a two-minute penalty for interfering with the goaltender.
Despite the power play advantage, the Cougars were unable to score.
Roughly three minutes later, Shane Collins of the Huskies received his team's second penalty of the period for cross-checking, granting the Cougars another early opportunity.
The Huskies' defence, however, was able to stave off any goal attempts from their opponents.
Exactly two minutes later, the Huskies received their third penalty of the period, with Ty Prefontaine being penalized for interference.
The Cougars seized the opportunity, with
Robbie Fromm-Delorme extending their lead to 3 – 0, with assists from
Connor Blake and
Clayton Hanus.
Passing the halfway mark of the period, the Huskies' Mark Rumsey scored his team's first goal of the game, with assists from Ben Tkachuk and Reed Jacobson
With less than two minutes remaining in the period,
Clayton Hanus of MRU was given a two-minute slashing penalty, granting the Huskies a power play advantage moving into the third period.
The Huskies quickly capitalized on the power play advantage, with Chantz Petruic scoring within the first thirty seconds of the period, bringing the score to 2 – 3. He received an assist from Justin Ball.
Shortly after, the Huskies' Cade Hayes received a two-minute high sticking penalty, giving the Cougars an opportunity to respond.
However, the Cougars were unable to get past the Huskies defence.
Just over the four-minute mark,
Dawson Milliken of the Cougars was penalized for charging, giving the Huskies another two-minute power play advantage.
The Huskies were unable to maneuver past the Cougars' defence despite having an additional player on the ice.
With six minutes remaining in the period, Cougars
Tristan Zandee gave the Huskies another power play advantage after he was penalized for high sticking.
The Cougars' defence remained resilient in preventing the Huskies from having any chances to score.
However, the Huskies were immediately given another power play advantage after MRU's
Kurtis Smythe was penalized for tripping.
The Cougars were able to prevent any of the Huskies' shots from finding the net.
In the last thirty seconds of the game, Huskies Liam Keeler and Cougars
Kyle Walker both received coincidental penalties for roughing in front of the Cougars net.
The Cougars ultimately overcame the Huskies, narrowly defeating them 3 – 2.
