Box Score The Mount Royal University women's hockey team returned to the arena Saturday night, aiming to secure another victory against the University of Regina Cougars after their 3 – 0 win on Friday evening.
MRU managed to take the lead in the first period.
Scoring her inaugural U Sports goal,
Julia Duke propelled MRU into a 1 – 0 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the period, receiving assists from Alex Spence and
Lyndsey Janes.
Regina's Raea Gilroy incurred the only penalty of the period, receiving a four-minute double minor for checking to the head with four minutes remaining in the period.
Starting the second period, MRU quickly extended their lead.
Jordyn Hutt scored just under three minutes into the period, securing a 2 – 0 lead with assists from
Summer Fomradas and
Emma Bergesen.
Halfway through the period, U of R responded as Raea Gilroy managed to sneak the puck between the legs of MRU's goalie, earning an assist from Jenna Merk and bringing the score to 2 – 1.
Shortly after,
Breanne Trotter received a two-minute hooking penalty, giving U of R a power play advantage. However, MRU's defence was effective in preventing any goals.
Roughly two minutes later, MRU's
Allee Gerrard received a bodychecking penalty, granting Regina another power play advantage. However, MRU's defence once again denied any shots from finding their net.
With just over five minutes remaining in the period, U of R's Jordyn Blais received a two-minute hooking penalty, giving MRU a power play advantage.
However, MRU was unable to get past Regina's defence.
In the last minute, MRU's
Jori Hansen-Young received a two-minute interference penalty, providing U of R with a power play advantage heading into the third period.
Quarter of the way through the third period, U of R's Hannah Pennell received a two-minute tripping penalty, giving MRU a chance to score on a power play advantage.
However, Regina's defence proved effective in thwarting any goal attempts made by MRU.
With just over five minutes remaining in the period, MRU had another power play advantage after U of R's Jenna Merk received a two-minute holding penalty.
However, Regina's defence prevented any of MRU's shots from finding the net.
With Just over two-minutes remaining in the game, U of R was given an opportunity to respond after MRU's
Breanne Trotter received a two-minute holding penalty.
MRU managed to defend their net in the last few minutes of the game, narrowly winning the game 2 – 1.
The women's hockey team will play their next game at the Scotiabank Saddledome during the annual Crowchild Classic showdown between Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary. The game takes place Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased
