CALGARY, AB – In their home opener on Friday afternoon, the Mount Royal University Cougars women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the University of Fraser Valley Cascades. This loss leaves the Cougars with a 0-3-1 record, while UFV climbs to second place in the Pacific Division with a 2-1-1 record.
The first 45 minutes of the match remained scoreless, with neither team able to generate enough offence to break the deadlock.
The Cougars had the best scoring opportunities in the first half, with defender
Jamie Rovere getting a clear shot in the box. However, Rovere's attempt was deflected just wide by the Cascades' defender.
In the 73rd minute, Fraser Valley managed to find the back of the net when Cougars defender
Sophie Kinghorn inadvertently headed the ball into her own goal.
Just a few minutes later, the Cascades extended their lead, making it 2-0. Jaspreet Dohl tapped in a centring pass from just inside the six-yard box.
Despite their best efforts, the Cougars failed to score, and UFV secured a clean sheet.
"We know how challenging it is to score goals," said Cougars' head coach,
Tino Fusco. "We showed some fight today, and that's something we're going to build on for Sunday's game."
Coach Fusco and the Cougars will continue their quest for their first win when they host the Trinity Western Spartans on Sunday at 1 p.m. You can catch the game in person at Stadium Field or stream it on
Canada West TV.
