MacEwan Griffins men's hockey handed the Mount Royal University Cougars a crushing 2-1 defeat in overtime on Saturday night at Flames Community Arena.

Prior to puck drop, four Cougars players were honoured as they will be graduating from their studies at the end of this season. Co-captains Andrew Fyten and Nolan Yaremko, along with tough veterans Jared Power and Kade Jensen were all given commemorative framed jerseys to recognize their time with the MRU men's hockey program.

Griffins' netminder Thomas Davis stole the show on MRU's Alumni night, stopping 43 of 44 shots.

Davis was dialled in right from the opening faceoff and wouldn't give any room for MRU to score. After scoring seven goals on Friday night, the Cougars were dealt a much different hand on Saturday.

The Griffins drew first blood midway through the second period. Zach Webb skated behind the net and fed a backhand pass to Merritt Oszytko. Oszytko shot the puck on the doorstep of the crease and over the shoulder of Cougars goalie Jackson Berry.

MacEwan took their 1-0 lead into the third period with Mount Royal up against the ropes.

Andrew Fyten wouldn't be denied early in the third. Clayton Hanus' wrist shot from the point would be deflected by Fyten who was parked in front of the net. On the night that Fyten and his fellow seniors were being honoured, the Sundre, Alta. local tied it up for the Cougars.

After 60 minutes of regulation play, this Saturday night battle required overtime.

With 20 seconds remaining in the extra frame, Fyten picked up the puck at his own blueline with a gallop in his stride. The forward weaved through the Griffins and rang a hard shot of the right post. MacEwan picked up the puck and headed the other way. Ethan Strang gained the zone, slowed up and ripped a shot past Jackson Berry to give the Griffins a 2-1 upset victory in overtime.

The Cougars will look to bounce back in their final regular season weekend of games when they take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon. Catch those games live on Canada West TV.

The Cougars were unstoppable once again, taking down the Bobcats 88-67 in what started with a nail-biting first quarter.

Piper Ingalls opened the night with a three-point swish to set the tone, putting Brandon in a favourable position off the bat.

They put up 16 in the first five minutes, a huge improvement from last night when the team only had seven in the first quarter. MRU trailed by seven before calling their first time out.

24-24 tie between both after the opening 10 minutes. There was tension in the air.

It wasn't until the second quarter that MRU seemed to regain their footing, going on a quick 10 point run and putting up their first real lead of the game. Brandon seemingly lost their momentum, and took time to regroup.

Reelta Tulkki broke the silence with a three from the right, bringing her team back to life. Tulkki finished the night with 18.

The majority of action happened under the rim and in the paint, a battle between Brittany Janzen and Noah Garcia while Tanis Metcalfe was fighting off Beth Dueck.

MRU stepped up, having a 13 point lead by the halfway mark of the second, but the Bobcats weren't giving up tonight.

Early into the third, Mount Royal solidified their lead, with a 19 point lead after five minutes. They would finish the quarter up 22 over the visitors.

The Bobcats had a huge night on the floor, surpassing their points from last in the first half, and more than doubling it by the end of the game.

Ingalls was an important part of Brandon's squad tonight, leading the team with 19 points and three rebounds.

For MRU, Brittany Janzen was a major player, having 10 points and seven rebounds before exiting the game early. She was later called tonight's player of the game.

Tonight, the Cougars not only celebrated their win, but their graduating senior, Jordan Blaskin.

She finished a long career nothing short of excellent, leaving records and a reputation many will strive to live up too. Congratulations Jordan.

The Cougars now hit the road for their final regular season games at the University of Calgary Dinos. Watch the games live on Canada West TV.

Go Cougars.

MBB: BDN (94) at MRU (84)

MRU men's basketball conceded their second game of the weekend to the Brandon University Bobcats with a 84-94 result.

Holt Tomie put forward a career best effort tonight, 37 points and nine rebounds, but this wasn't enough to overcome the visitors. Keivonte Watts was second on the roster with 16 points.

"I just wanted to give it everything I had," said Tomie. "It just sucks to lose. The bad third quarter just put us out of it."

The first quarter saw promise for MRU, down at the five minute mark but pulling a seven point lead after 10. They were able to keep it close for the remainder of the first half but a tough third quarter set them back.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Brandon put up 14 points over MRU and boasted a 15 point lead. By the end of the third they were up 14.

Anthony Tsegakele was a powerhouse for BDN, throwing down 22 points and seven rebounds.

Jahmaal Gardner also had impressive numbers with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds despite having to step out of the game temporarily with a hand injury.

MRU outscored the Bobcats 32-28 in the fourth quarter but couldn't regain what they had lost.

BU improves to 10-8 while Mount Royal falls to 8-10 going into the final weekend of regular season play.

The Cougars go across town for one final Crowchild Classic match-up when they take on the Dinos on February 10 and 11 in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Catch the games on Canada West TV.

Go Cougars.
