Box Score The Mount Royal University women's hockey team emerged victorious as they hosted the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday night.Â
In the opening period, the two teams engaged in a closely contested battle.Â
The sole penalty of the period occurred in the final five minutes when MRU's Alex Spence was penalized for high sticking. Despite the power play advantage for U of A, the Cougars successfully defended their net. Â
MRU had a slight edge in shots, outshooting the Pandas seven to six. However, neither team managed to score any points.Â
In the second period, action unfolded rapidly. Â
Within the first two minutes, MRU's Alex Spence received a delay of game penalty. The U of A seized the opportunity with Natalie Kieser scoring and receiving assists from teammates Sara Kazeil and Izzy Lajoie.Â
Shortly afterwards, U of A's Jadynn Morden was penalized for bodychecking, providing the Cougars with a power play advantage. However, the Pandas defense successfully prevented any goals.Â
Approximately three minutes later, U of A's Jadynn Morden was sent back to the box for cross checking, giving the Cougars another power play advantage. However, the Cougars were unable to secure any points.Â
The Cougars power play advantage persisted two minutes later, with U of A's Allison Reich penalized for hooking. Despite the opportunity, the Cougars were unable to capitalize.
In the final six minutes of the period, U of A's Izzy Lajoie granted the Cougars another power play opportunity after being penalized for interference. The Cougars failed to capitalize on the opportunity.Â
The third period saw both teams battling for control of the puck.Â
In the first five minutes, MRU's
Sydney Benko received a penalty for checking to the head, providing the Pandas an opportunity to extend their lead. Nevertheless, the Cougars successfully defended their goal.Â
Roughly nine minutes into the period, U of A's Megan Wilson returned the power play advantage to the Cougars by receiving a cross-checking penalty. However, the Pandas defense proved effective in preventing any goals.Â
In the final three minutes of the period, MRU opted for an aggressive strategy, pulling their goalie, and creating a six-on-five advantage. This move proved effective as
Lyndsey Janes of MRU leveled the score at 1 – 1, forcing the game into overtime. She was assisted by

The three-on-three overtime period witnessed both teams aggressively battling for control of the puck, eager to secure a victory for their respective teams.Â

In the five-minute overtime period, neither team managed to score, leading the game to a shootout.Â

Aliya Jomha of MRU then stepped up, successfully putting her team into the lead, by scoring against U of A's Halle Oswald. Â
In an effort to keep U of A in the game, Natalie Kieser took her turn on the ice but was unsuccessful in getting the puck past

MRU's
Breanne Trotter secured the victory for the Cougars by finding the net with the final shot.Â
