Box Score With family and friends in attendance, the Mount Royal University women's hockey team displayed the school's first ever U Sports national championship banner at the Flames Community Arena in their home opening match against the University of Alberta.
The first period saw two penalties in the first five minutes of the game. U of A's Payton Laumbach was sent to the box early for crosschecking. Not long after, MRU's
Breanne Trotter received an interference call giving the Pandas a powerplay advantage.
Assisted by Madison Willan and Sara Kazeil, Panda's Jadynn Morden secured the first goal six minutes into the period, giving them a 1 – 0 lead.
The second period saw the Cougar's struggle to find their footing as the Panda's looked hungry to extend their lead.
The first six minutes saw one penalty against the Panda's Jadynn Morden for slashing, and two penalties against MRU's
Ava Metzger for interference and
Emma Bergesen for roughing.
U of A's Jadynn Morden put the Panda's further ahead with a goal nine minutes into the second period. She was assisted by Payton Laumbach and Madison Willan.
The Cougar's received three additional penalty calls against them in the second half of the period.
Jordyn Hutt received two minutes for body checking,
Athena Hauck for roughing, and
Jori Hansen-Young for cross checking.
The Pandas were able to maintain their lead going into the third period, with the Cougars unable to secure any points.

Ava Metzger received a penalty in the first half of the period for slashing. U of A's Taylor Catcher was also sent to the box for slashing.
In the last five seconds of the game, U of A's Madison Willan scored a third goal for the Pandas, securing a 3 - 0 victory over the Cougars.
Captain of the Cougars,
Lyndsey Janes said they hope to give up less penalties as they face off against the Panda's tomorrow.
"We chatted about it after the game and we thought we put forward a really good five on five game," she said. We gave up a lot of penalties and so that's what we're looking to clean up tomorrow."
The Cougars next home game will be Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. as they host the University of Calgary Dinos. Tickets are available
