Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey defeated the University of Alberta Golden Bears 4-2 on Saturday night. The victory gave the Cougars the weekend sweep after a wild 6-5 shootout win on Friday in Edmonton.

"We didn't over analyze last night," said Mount Royal head coach Bert Gilling. "The big thing Friday was getting the win and having the opportunity to complete the sweep tonight."

The Cougars broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period. Blake Stevenson entered the offensive zone and fired a quick shot through the defender and past Alberta netminder Ethan Kruger. The tally was the rookie's sixth of the year.

MRU's lead wouldn't last long. Ryan Hughes picked up a drop pass and shot a wrister past goaltender Shane Farkas to bring the score even.

Hughes added another goal early in the third period with some nifty stickhandling and a quick release to give Alberta their first lead of the weekend. The Golden Bears had a strong hold and control of the game with less than 20 minutes to play.

However, Gilling's Cougars wouldn't quit. Connor Bouchard jammed the puck past Kruger after a wild scramble in front of the Alberta net. MRU was right back in it.

Just 19 seconds later, Robbie Holmes deflected a Connor Blake point shot that fooled Ethan Kruger for the go-ahead-goal. The quick turnaround had restored the Cougars lead and given them back the momentum.

Alberta forward Tyler Preziuso received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for cross-checking MRU' Josh Tarzwell in the face. The penalty made it very difficult for the Golden Bears to attempt a comeback.

Spencer Moe iced the game off for the Cougars with an empty netter to make it 4-2. Despite not actually putting the puck in the net, Moe was dragged down on a breakaway by an Alberta player and was awarded a goal by the officials.

Saturday's victory for MRU gives them a three-point cushion over the Golden Bears for second placed. The Cougars now sit three points behind the University of Calgary Dinos for first in Canada West.

Nothing feels better than a weekend sweep. MRU's men's basketball team topped Lethbridge 85-79 to complete the double wins.

Kevointe Watts and Holt Tomie combined for more than 50 per cent of the team's points in tonight's match-up and demonstrated that they are the Canada West duo to watch this semester.

Tomie had his usual 22 points accompanied with seven rebounds and five assists on 62 per cent shooting. But it was Watts who stole the show.

"I was locked in from the beginning," said Watts, MRU player of the game. "I let [my team] down yesterday and I couldn't do it again."

Watts put up 26 points tonight, throwing down two in the second half to bring the record-breaking crowd to its feet.

Mawien Mawien, Daniel Mulder and Ijah Nelson had nine a piece tonight, having a major impact in the paint. The Cougars success tonight can be attributed to a stunning defensive performance, and clear on court communication.

On the Pronghorn side, they seemed to mesh better on the floor tonight, and found more shot accuracy.

Shae Gibb and Tag Layton led the way with 15 and 14 points respectively, but most of their success came from their court vision and ball distribution.

Both teams return next weekend, with the U of L host Saskatchewan in their home gym, while MRU heads to Kelowna and takes on the UBCO Heat.

Mount Royal improves to 6-4 on the season.

Back-to-back wins for MRU women's basketball to start 2023, after an incredible 62-72 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night.

The Cougars really carried their momentum from Friday into today's match-up and weren't going to let tonight be close.

Jordan Blaskin stormed onto the hardwood tonight, opening the scoring with a quick five in favour of Mount Royal. She was unstoppable, rushing the paint to grab rebounds and constantly shifting around the arch to find space and opportunities. Blaskin was a major presence and leader on the floor tonight and helped drive the victory.

Alongside Blaskin was Madison Hooper who put up 14 of her own while grabbing three rebounds.

Lethbridge had a better showing tonight despite the score, finding lanes to rush the rim and take easier lay-up opportunities compared to being held deep last night.

Haily Weaver was a driving force for the Pronghorns once again, finding space all over the front court and adding 14 to the board. Danielle Nadeau also made a difference on the scoresheet for U of L, finishing the night with 15 and seven rebounds.

Blaskin was named player of the game for Mount Royal after tonight, with 17 points, three rebounds and 43 per cent shooting, 57 per cent from two.

She thinks that her team is coming together at the perfect time, saying "we're very confident going into this year. We really feel like we are gelling."

This Cougar squad shows incredible promise as they start the second half of their season undefeated. If they continue to carry this forward into their future games both on the road and at home, Mount Royal could see a chance at making the playoffs and putting up a promising run.

Next stop, the women head to Kelowna where they'll face the University of British Columbia Okanagan. After this weekend, MRU sits 5-5 on the season while the Heat hold a 6-6 record.
