Â
Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey suffered a 4-1 loss to the University of Alberta Pandas Friday night at Flames Community Arena.
Â
The opening period offered 20 minutes of low event hockey. Both teams did a great job at limiting chances. MRU pressure the Pandas and netminder Halle Oswald briefly but were scoreless after the first.
Â
Alberta drew first blood with a soft shot from Kallie Clouston that got past the Cougars goalie,
Kaitlyn Ross. The goal came midway through the second.
Â
The Pandas added to their lead with a powerplay goal from Jadynn Morden. Alberta broke up the ice seamlessly and Morden fired a wrister from the circle and past Ross.
Â
The game has completely shifted in momentum and Alberta had it in their hands. Natalie Kiesser scored on a breakaway that barely squeaked through Ross' five hole to give the Pandas a commanding 3-0 lead.
Â
With a move of desperation, MRU coach
Scott Rivett pulled Ross for an extra skater with over four minutes left. Alberta forward Madison Willian quickly potted an empty netter to put the game out of reach.
Â
Cougars' captain
Tatum Amy broke Halle Oswald's shutout bid with under a minute left in the game and the Cougars on a five-on-three powerplay.
Â
Amy's goal would be too little, too late for MRU and the Pandas took home a 4-1 win.
Â
The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Edmonton. Catch the game live on
CanadaWest TV.

MBB: LET (75) at MRU (84)
Kenyon Court watched a huge effort from the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, but it wasn't enough to take down a powerhouse Cougars squad.Â
Mount Royal took an early lead and held on to the final moments, with a 84-75 victory, despite a LET coming back from a 22 point deficit.Â
Tonight saw a slow start for U of L while MRU took advantage, putting up big numbers early and leading after 10, 21-14.Â
The Cougars put space between themselves and the pronghorns in the second quarter, finishing the half with a massive 20 point lead.Â
Tag Layton was a star for Lethbridge despite the deficit, with a roar from the crowd with every touch of the ball. The enthusiasm fueled his game and allowed him to truly use the momentum in his favour, finishing the night with nine points, four rebounds and three assists.Â
LET couldn't hold onto the ball, allowing MRU to swipe every pass and drive, the Cougars scoring 12 off turnovers in the first half alone.Â
The third quarter saw Lethbridge come alive, out scoring Mount Royal 25-23, but still trailing by 18 going into the final 10 minutes of play.Â
Kymani Pollard was a big player alongside Layton for the Pronghorns tonight, putting up 12 points on 50 per cent shooting. But Jeff Rodehutskors was the leader on the stat sheet with 15 points and five rebounds.Â
Even though Lethbridge picked up in the third, MRU threw down. Three dunks in three minutes, two from Kevointe Watts and a third from
Mawien Mawien.Â
It was a typical showing from the Cougars with Watts splitting the night with
Holt Tomie. Both men put up necessary stats in tonight's win, with Tomie putting up 18 points, five rebounds and nine assists, while Watts ended the night with 16, two and four.Â
But Mount Royal awarded player of the game to
Ijah Nelson for his drive on court and vision. He finished the night with 17.
The last three minutes of the game saw Lethbridge's hard work pay off. Only eight points separated the two teams but
Sam Barnie brought it back to 10 in favour of MRU and added a win to the Cougars record.
Both teams are back tomorrow night in Kenyon Court for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Catch the game live on campus or at
Canada West TV.Â
Go Cougars.

WBB: LET (57) at MRU (62)
MRU women's basketball brought the fire tonight, taking their first game back against the U of L Pronghorns 62-57 in their first battle at home for 2023.
Lethbridge took off after a slow start in the first quarter, led by Tobore Okome, third year forward from Edmonton. After the first 10 minutes of play Okome put up nine, finishing the game with 15, along with nine rebounds and two steals.Â
Mount Royal made a major come back in the second quarter, putting up an impressive 22 points while holding LET to 13. The second quarter put the Cougars up by two going into the second half.Â
Madison Hooper added significant numbers to the board, finishing the night with 11. Lethbridge caught on to MRU's success in the paint and focused their efforts on shutting down
Tanis Metcalfe, Jenessa Ransoomair and
Megan Wellinghurst, but they were unsuccessful. Wellinghurst and Ramsoomair combined for 18 while Metcalfe put up 14 of her own.Â
Metcalfe rightfully earned herself player of the game tonight, never folding under the pressure thrown her way by the Lethbridge defence.
It was clear the Cougars were hungry, forcing the Pronghorns to turnover the ball 21 times in the first half and 15 in the second. Lethbridge only managed to shoot 12.5 per cent from the arch.
U of L made good looks under the basket to Okome but MRU had the size advantage and was able to block almost every attempt.Â
Mount Royal held the lead through the third but lost it quickly after the start of the fourth. With Okome being pressed, Kyra Collier stepped up for the Pronghorns.Â
Collier had 19 of the team's points on 54 per cent shooting, and finished with five rebounds, two steals and three assists.
Five minutes left. One point separating the squads. The lead is constantly flipping back and forth.Â
One minute left. Cougars up by three. Lethbridge has fouls to give and takes the risk. Both Ramsoomair and Metcalfe sank both their free throws and secured the victory for the Cougars.Â
Both squads are back in Kenyon Court tomorrow night for a 5 p.m. tip off. Catch the game live on campus or on
Canada West TV.Â
