Box Score 2 Home Games:
MSOC: UBC (0) at MRU (1)
For the first time in Mount Royal men's soccer history, they have defeated the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 1-0.
This was the rematch everyone anticipated after the Cougars were defeated in the Canada West semi-final after two over time periods, and MRU did not disappoint.
The energy could be felt throughout Stadium Field with a back crowd on the bleachers as the intensity increasingly grew.
Mohammed El Gandour gave everyone something to celebrate just 20 minutes in, with the only goal of the game.
El Gandour sprinted up the pitch and passed UBCs defence before hammering a ball from 25 yards out. His power behind the kick couldn't be stopped by Axel Thulin Lennselius.
It was
Caden Rogozinski who took home the title player of the game today after battling against the Thunderbird offence for the entire 90 minutes.
"It was great to experience at home. I'm really proud of the boy," said Rogozinski on the win. "We worked really hard, we've been training really well. And they're a great team but we keep getting good results so I hope we can keep scoring going forward."
The Thunderbirds were unable to find the scoresheet this afternoon but kept the Cougars on their toes the entire time.
"After our goal, after we got that lead it was really good. We just had to grind the rest of the game, but that goal was a real game changing moment," said Rogozinski.
UBCs midfielder, Logan Chung, held control in centre field, and forced MRU to change their plan of attack throughout the match. He also provided his teammates with multiple scoring opportunities but luck wasn't on their side.
Sterling Kerr was granted the shut out and the win after his performance on the field, saving all four shots that found their way past Rogozinski and the Cougars defensive line.
There was no shortage of excitement today regardless of the low score. The officials award six yellow cards, three going to each side and three each half.
After today's win Mount Royal's record improves to 5-0-1 while UBC falls to 6-3-1. Both squads are currently ranked within the USports top 10 for men's soccer with MRU sitting 7th while British Columbia was ranked 10th.
The Cougars will host again tomorrow as Trinity Western travels to Calgary. Catch the game at Stadium Field or online at
Canada West TV for their 3 p.m. kick-off.

WSOC: TRU (2) at MRU (0)
The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack women's soccer team at Stadium field today, with the Wolfpack claiming the win 2-0.
Thompson Rivers came out hard, pushing the Cougars onto their heels for the first fifteen minutes of play before MRU was able to find their footing.
Hawan Abdissa stripped the ball from
Isabella Chirico before taking TRUs first big shot opportunity of the night, 6 minutes in.
A huge shot by Abdissa and a bold move by
Lizzy Knight led MRU's
Keilyn Stabler to make a goal line save and keep the game score less in the 9th minute.
The scramble continued as
Sophie Kinghorn made a hail-mary tack in the left corner of the box, leading TRU to a penalty shot and goal in the 30th minute, bringing the score to 1-0.
The Cougars energy kicked up following the penalty, making Wolfpack goalie Marissa Young jump repeatedly to make impressive saves before MRU heads could connect. A last second shot from Cougars Ashytn Haycock found the crossbar to end the first half on a high intensity note.
Mount Royal showed promise starting the second half, determined to even the score. Their speed, intensity, and accuracy all improved from the very first minute, but the wolfpack was too quick and had crystal communication on the pitch.
A huge scramble in front of the net in the 50th minute brought TRUs lead to two.
The first shot from TRU came from Ainsley Grether before Katie Chun was able to find the rebound and send it in.
Alexis Watson put her body on the line for MRU, blocking repeated opportunities before the ball went high into the top of the netting. Knight became victim to unfortunate circumstances, being caught under the bodies of both MRU and TRU as a dog pile started to form.
Both teams got increasingly aggressive, with the body contact becoming extremely noticeable on almost every play before TRU's Lydia Keating received the team's first of three yellow cards. Caylah Lemon and Keating collected the other two before the final whistle blew.
These led to close opportunities for the Cougars but they were unable to capitalize on any, including a header just outside the left post by
Catriona McFadden in the 78th..
Young was the star today, putting out an unbelievable performance this afternoon for the Wolfpack, and rightfully earned the win and the shut out.
The Cougars will now face the University of British Columbia Okanagan tomorrow for a 1 p.m.kick off at Stadium field. Catch the game live or online at
Canada West TV.
