Box Score 2 Home Game:
MSOC: LET (0) at MRU (5)
The MRU men's soccer team stood dominant at home this Saturday after defeating the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-0.Â
From the first whistle the Cougars showed why they are ranked number seven nationally, holding the majority of possession and putting up their first goal in the 16th minute.Â
Mowbray Beghin capitalized for the men after receiving a rebound in front of the net and pushed it deep into the back, past the U of L goaltender, Armaan Thawer. The initial shot came from fourth year forward, Mohamed El Gandour on the left side of the field and bounced towards the middle of the box. This was Beghin's second goal of the year.
Abel Nesibu put one away his first goal for the season in the 30th minute when he caught a high ball of Lethbridge's defence and buried the ball with his left foot.Â
El Gandour quickly stole the spotlight, notching two on the board within two minutes of each other, bringing the score to 4-0 before the half was over. Â
The second half also saw a strong performance by the Cougars. David Schaefer scored his third goal of the season in the 52nd minute. The forward carried the ball up field and placed it sweetly across the line and into the opposite corner of the net.Â
Lethbridge never gave up, holding MRU to just the one goal for the second half and increased pressure with every minute that passed.Â
Danilo Morales was a strong point for the Pronghorns, staying focused the entire 90 minutes and adding some impressive opportunities for the team.Â
Alongside Morales was Damon Field. Field held the back line well for Lethbridge, repeatedly shutting down the Cougars offence and assisting Thawer in every way possible. Both men deserved the player of the game title for LET, but it was Morales who was awarded at the end.Â
On the Cougars side, El Gandour was given player of the game.Â
"Honestly just felt a little tough for the first 10-15 minutes, got a couple of opportunities and couldn't bury them," said El Gandour. "Then I got two within a minute and it felt pretty good to get on the score sheet today."
The men now improve to 3-0-1 on the season and will go up against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Huskies sit 1-2-1 after a loss to the University of Calgary Saturday September 10.
"Just kind of pedal to the metal and get the first one and continue to keep the ball rolling, and try not to concede. That's the game plan every week," El Gandour says looking at tomorrow's match-up. "Same W tomorrow."
Catch the game live here at Stadium Field or on Canada West TV for the 3 p.m. kick off, Sunday September 11.
