The Mount Royal University men's basketball team lost to the University of Calgary Dinos, 78-86, in a Friday night battle in Kenyon Court.
From the first minute of play, the Dinos took control and gave the impression this would be a one sided match, but it ended with such high intensity as adrenaline filled the gym.
It's not clear what coach Marc Dobell said to his team at half time, but it's clear that it worked.
The men made a massive comeback with 28 points in the third quarter. This brought what was a 15 point lead for the Dinos to only one going into the final 10 minutes of play.
Nate Petrone was at the top of the stats sheet for both teams tonight after putting up a massive 30 point game. His sharp shooting was untouchable with the next closest man on the board being Dylan Lutes. Lutes also had a great night, with 19 points and four rebounds.
Petrone and Lutes shot 67 per cent and 57 per cent from inside the arch.
"Slow start, they came out hitting shots and we turned it on too late. Can't do that against U of C," Petrone said. "When we're hitting our shots everything falls into place. That's what we gotta do. We gotta hit shots and we will win."
Petrone was named the men's basketball player of the game after tonight's performance. He was one point shy of breaking his season high of 31 points. The high was set in their last match up against the Dinos on January 15.
Holt Tomie rounded out the terrific trio this evening, with 13 points of his own and battling for three rebounds.
Tomie, Petrone and Lutes are a threat on the hardwood and the driving force behind the Cougars team. Their leadership and ability to play physically are going to be needed in tomorrow's rematch against the number two ranked Calgary team.
Tip-off is at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Kenyon Court. Catch the game live or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
This is a game you won't want to miss, as it is the final home game for three MRU men. Matt Fullerton, Nick Tancon and Patrick Vandervelden will be recognized for their years of dedication to the team before they graduate from Mount Royal University.
The MRC men's basketball team from 1996/97 will also be recognized, 25 years after taking home the ACAC championship banner and the CCAA national silver medal.

The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in a dominating offensive performance Friday night at Calgary Flames Community Arena.
Scoring opened just under halfway through the first period by Nolan Yaremko. Yaremko found the loose puck in front of the Thunderbirds goal after a mad scramble, shoving it past the right pad of Ethan Anders.
Seven seconds later, the Cougars were quick to add another goal to their lead after Riley Sawchuk won the faceoff, springing Yaremko on a breakaway.
From below the goal line, Lane Gilliss found Robbie Holmes in front. Holmes found the rebound from his initial shot, tucking it between the right post and pad of the Thunderbirds goalie.Â
The Thunderbirds answered back before the end of the first period. Scott Atkinson released a rocket that clanked off the left post and into the slot. Chris Douglas scooped up the rebound and ripped it over Riley Morris' left shoulder.
MRU put together a beautiful tic-tac-toe play between Brad Kennedy, Sawchuk, and Ethan Regnier in the second period to further their lead.Â
Yaremko scored his third goal of the night, getting himself his first Canada West career hat trick and putting the Cougars up 5-1.
The third period was filled with penalties from both teams and remained scoreless until the last five minutes. MRU's sixth goal of the evening was scored by Jared Power, who walked into the slot and shot a wrister beating Anders blocker side.
UBC's second goal was scored on a two-on-one opportunity by Liam Kindree, who beat Morris clean on the glove side.
The Cougars look to keep the five-game win streak alive, with tomorrow night's rematch at Calgary Flames Community Arena at 6:00 pm. Be sure to catch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.Â

Women's basketball saw a Crowchild Classic upset Friday night, when the Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the University of Calgary Dinos, 52-46, in Kenyon Court.
This MRU team was reinvigorated after last weekend's defeat of the previously undefeated University of Alberta Pandas. The victory allowed them the confidence to dominate on the court against the number two ranked Dinos.
Â
After a slow start for MRU, shooting only 13 per cent in the first quarter, the Cougars found their footing and dominated for the remaining 30 minutes of play.
The second saw the women closing the gap the Calgary created early in the game with third-year guard,
Julia Summers, sinking a beautiful buzzer beating layup.Â
MRU took over the third, holding the Dinos to only two points in the first five minutes of play. Not only were the Cougars impressive defensively, they went on an offensive run and got themselves a game changing 11 points.Â
Calgary had their own sharp shooters on the court tonight, with Amélie Colin making their own buzzer beating three-point bucket to tie the game 39-39 in the final seconds of the third quarter.Â
The intensity grew with the fourth, as the lead was passed back and forth between both teams.Â
Cougars guard,
Maddison Hooper, had a noteworthy night for herself. Prior to tonight's match up, Hooper had only 10 points across the four games played this season. Tonight she nearly doubled her stats, putting up eight points, four steals and for rebounds.Â
Tanis Metcalfe always showed her impressive play against the Dinos, with 11 points to her name, six of which came in the fourth quarter alone. She also had 10 grabs under the hoop.Â
Â
The star of the show tonight was
Jordan Blaskin for the Mount Royal Cougars. Blaskin had both a defensively beautiful night in the paint, making eight huge rebounds for the team. Her commanding force tonight on the hardwood was a necessary factor in the victory.Â
"I think after last weekend we found our groove," Blaskin said. "I think we grew up very quickly and matured. And I think practices have been a grind and I think that's starting to pay off."
Blaskin was named tonight's player of the game for the Cougars.Â
The women will rematch tomorrow night for a 4 p.m. tip off in Kenyon Court. This is the final Crowchild Classic match up for these teams in the regular season. Catch the game live or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
Tomorrow's game is also Mount Royal University's alumni night! Come out and help recognize the 25th anniversary of the 1996/97 ACAC back-to-back championship team.
Player of the game: Jordan Blaskin.
