MVB: MAN (0) at MRU (3)

The MRU men's volleyball team went into tonight's match-up high off a clean three set victory Friday night, and successfully carried that momentum forward.

Mount Royal defeated Manitoba for the second time this weekend in straight sets, making this weekend a clean sweep for the men.

Tonight there was a more assertive and confident Bison squad on the court, with constant pressure against the men, and forcing the team to readjust off ball positioning.

MRU took the first set 25-18, with an impressive 69.2 per cent attack average compared to the 6 per cent they were able to hold Manitoba too.

Matthew Campbell sat at four kills after two sets for the Bisons. The team was putting up attempts but couldn't find the floor, and had zero per cent on attack for the second, with Mount Royal bringing the score to 2-0 after taking the set 25-19.

Chris Byam and Max Haronga were strong for the Cougars side, with 14 and seven respectively.

Jackson Brennan was another one to watch for MRU, with 24 assists, two aces and five digs on the night.

This performance earned him player of the game for the team, with head coach Shawn Sky saying Brennan was a driving force behind MRU hitting over .500.

"A big thing for us last night after our meeting was, we had the big 3-0 win, but we didn't play to our capabilities. But we wanted to come in tonight, finish the semester with a better performance and just bring a lot more pressure," said Brennan.

The visitors had an impressive third, exchanging the lead constantly with the Cougars throughout the set. There was a new energy on the court as the crowd felt momentum shift toward Manitoba.

This momentum kept them close but the Bisons were unable to overtake the home team, with Mount Royal claiming the last set 25-21.

After tonight's win Mount Royal goes into the three week Christmas break with a 9-3 record, while Manitoba falls to 4-8.

2023 starts with the Cougars on the road as they visit the University of Winnipeg Wesmen for January 6 and 7.

The Trinity Western University Spartans earned a weekend split with their thrilling overtime upset over Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey.

MRU showed their dominance is the first ten minutes. The Cougars held possession and peppered Spartans' goaltender Isaac Labelle.

Zafir Rawji broke the ice to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Jared Power fed Rawji a stretch pass to give the forward a breakaway and Rawji sniped a wrister over the shoulder of Labelle.

Just 32 seconds later, Mount Royal added another one. Ethan Reginer one-touched a shot of a big rebound off Labelle's pad. Reginer had a wide-open cage to put his team up two.

With MRU looking unstoppable, Spartans' coach Ben Walter called a timeout to give his group a chance to settle down.

The timeout proved to be just what Trinity Western needed.

Joshua Bruce found himself all alone on a breakaway and deked a backhander over Cougars goalie, Riley Sims. The goal from Bruce was just the third shot that Sims had faced so far.

The 23-4 shot count after the first was showing dominance from MRU but the Cougars were only up by one.

The second period saw a complete shift in momentum. Mount Royal let off the pressure and the Spartans capitalized.

A wrist shot from Mikol Sartor deflected of Mitchell Joss' stick and past Sims. After two periods, the Cougars and Spartans were tied 2-2.

The Cougars started the third period on the powerplay. Nolan Yaremko fired a wrister from the left faceoff dot and past Labelle to restore the Mount Royal lead.

The Spartans drew even again midway through the final period. Joss got his second of the game from a tip in past the outstretched leg of Sims.

Sixty minutes would not provide a winner and four-on-four overtime was needed.

With 2:14 left in overtime, the Spartans scored to win the game. Defenceman Landon Fuller was the hero for his squad and his teammates poured over the boards to celebrate with him. It was a steal of a win for TWU who were outshot 61-19.

The Cougars will finish the semester with a 12-3-2 record and look to compete for top spot in Canada West in 2023.

WVB: MAN (1) at MRU (3)

The Manitoba Bison's came out swinging in their Saturday night rematch against MRU, pushing tonight to four sets before the Cougars took home a 3-1 win, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22.
Mount Royal had an aggressive start to tonight, going on a 6-0 run against MAN, before forcing the visitors into an early timeout.

The Bison's seemed uneasy on their feet and struggled to find a rhythm early on against a determined Cougars offense. MRU had beautiful ball placement, sending all attacks just out of reach of Manitoba and sending them diving.

The score was 13-3 for MRU before Manitoba was forced into a second time out.

Raya Surinx was the turning point for Manitoba in the first set, putting up three kills consecutively to bring the Bisons up to eight against Mount Royals 16.

Sunrise, combined with Brenna Bedosky and Ella Gray, found a way to pierce through the Cougars blockers. Bedosky and Gray combined for 18 of the team's total 54 kills, while Surinx finished the night with 21.

The visitors had an unbelievable comeback, from a nine point deficit to one going into the last five points of the set. MRU eventually took what became an incredibly tight set, 25-23.

Madison Marshall was the one to watch for the home team this weekend, putting down 15 kills tonight after her 16 yesterday. Marshall also had nine digs to complete the night and coin her the MRU player of the game.

"It felt good, it was a lot of fun. I think, going out tonight, just having fun for the last win of the season, that's really all we wanted to do, take care of business," said Marshall. "It's crunch time in the new year. "

Manitoba were in control of the second set, knocking the Cougars off balance and out of position. But the strong defence that this MRU squad is known for held the set close from start to finish.

It looked as though the visitors would take the set until the last few points when Mount Royal seemed unstoppable, going on a four point run to take the set 25-20.

The Bisons came alive in the third set with Eve Catojo and Bedosky, and with the substitution into the game for Light Uchechukwu. Manitoba was able to claim the third set due to the combined effort of these three women, 25-19.

Both squads left everything on the court in the fourth and final set of the game.

Ella Lawrence, Mya Morgan and Emma Boyd were all instrumental in the fourth, each adding kills to the board and helping create distance between MAN and MRU.

The 25th and final point for the set was put down by Morgan for Mount Royal, sealing the second 3-1 win of the weekend for the Cougars.

This concludes the Fall semester for the women's volleyball team, going into the break with a 8-4 record. They return to the court on January 6 in Winnipeg when they take on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
