There's nothing quite like a Crowchild Classic match-up, even more exciting when it's a semi-final game.

Mount Royal University will play for a Canada West bronze medal after conceding 0-1 to the University of Calgary Dinos at the University of British Columbia's Thunderbird Stadium in this afternoon's Canada West Men's Soccer Semi-Final.

The Cougars were handed their first loss of the season by their cross-town rivals after extra time in a very back-and-forth, aggressive match in Vancouver.

Neither squad was able to score for the entirety of regular time, but instead both pressed their defensive high into the midfield creating a near standstill.

It was a cagey affair from the start with the first half devoid of anything of real note and any clear cut chances for either side.

Mount Royal came out with more intensity to start the second and David Schaefer had the first real chance of the game with a free kick that was tipped over by Calgary keeper Jake Ruschkowski. The Dinos keeper was called into action again 11 minutes later, keeping out an Ethan Keen effort, after some nice footwork inside the box from the Cougars player to set up the chance.

Mohammed El Gandour was a focus point for the Dinos as they centred their defensive efforts around shutting him down and preventing him from getting much action on ball.

Despite the pressure, captain El Gandour kept up his usual presence on the pitch, earning him player of the game.

Sterling Kerr demonstrated why he also dawns the captain title, staying strong in net and keeping his team in contention, only allowing one past.

Nearing the 40 minute mark, MRU started playing like the team they have been all season, creating better pass opportunities and connecting beautifully between the men, but were unlucky in front of CGY's goal.

The first half finished with both teams even at zero, looking to strategize and increase the pressure for the final 45. However, neither team was able to capitalize.

Mount Royal kept up their energy and pressure throughout the first half of added time, putting up near opportunities but were still unable to finish against the wall that is Dino's goalkeeper, Ruschkowski.

Calgary nearly took the match in the 79th minute when a header went low and in but no goal was called as a sideline official threw up their flag and signalled for offside.

The Dinos finally put a goal on the board, and took the game, 19 minutes into overtime when Decklin Mahmi caught a loose ball and pushed it past Kerr.

The Canada West championship game will be played tomorrow afternoon with a 1:30 p.m. kick-off between the University of Calgary Dinos and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirdsw.

Mount Royal will take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears during Sunday's bronze medal game, starting at 12:00 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium.
