MRU's women's volleyball team had an electric performance tonight, defeating the University of Regina Cougars in straight sets for their first matchup of the weekend.
Mount Royal demonstrated why they were ranked so highly in the preseason coaches poll taking the sets 25-16, 25-16 and 25-13.
The squad brought the pressure, out hitting REG 0.429 to 0.016 at the end of the match, and shutting them down with five blocks.
Quinn Pelland had quite the night, with four kills, two service aces and five digs. Alongside Pelland was outside hitter
Haley Roe who put up six kills and four digs of her own.
The team was able to spread their success across their entire roster with eight girls able to hammer down kills for a total 33 on the night.
Roe started the night off for MRU, holding the serve for the opening second points, providing a good footing for the squad to take off and take the first set easily.
The Cougars had hit a .522 hitting average in the second set and further pushed a comeback out of Regina's reach, before a strong third set finish.
The women now improve to 4-1 on the season and are back in action against the University of Regina for a 6 p.m. rematch tomorrow night.

MBB: MRU (77) at SSK (99)
With files from Saskatchewan.
The Mount Royal University Cougars were unable to capitalize in their first game of the regular season, falling 77-99 against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
This young squad showed lots of promise in Keivonte Watts and Ijah Nelson, with both men demonstrating good shooting ability and smart on ball decision making. Watts put up 20 points and four rebounds for the Cougars while Nelson had 11 points of his own.
But veteran
Holt Tomie was the true driving force with an impressive 28 points, a career high after his previous being 23 last season against the UBC Thunderbirds. He was also able to grab five rebounds and shell out four assists.
However, it still wasn't enough to overcome this Huskies group. Saskatchewan was shooting 49 per cent from every inch of the court tonight against the 40 put up by the Cougars, with their best performance coming in the second half, shooting 45 per cent in the fourth and nearly 43 per cent from three in the third.
The final quarter of play saw Mount Royal outscoring the Huskies 21-15, but it was too late and too large a gap for the team to close.
Saskatchewan's speed and aggression under the hoop would be their driving factor, with 54 points coming within the paint and at one point leading by 32.
The two teams will return to the Physical Activity Complex at the University of Saskatchewan tomorrow night for a 7 p.m. tip off following the women
's game.
