The Mount Royal women's basketball team took on the Grant MacEwan University Griffins for a Friday night home opener in Kenyon Court. The evening ended with a group of happy Cougars, claiming a 69-61 victory in a back-and-forth battle on the hardwood.

Both squads came out evenly matched, the lead switching 10 times and never going past nine points.

Two Griffins were able to push past 10 points a piece, with Makenzie Reeve making 14 with two rebounds and teammate Noelle Kilbreath having 14 and four.

It was Hayley Lalor who commanded the floor for GMU, having eight points, 10 rebounds and a steal.

Even with these three notable performances, they couldn't hold off the determined Mount Royal group who finally found their footing nearing the end of the first half .

A clutch 3 by Kiana Ker with 2 minutes left in the third brought the room to their feet and reinvigorated the group. She was followed closely by a beautiful midrange bucket from Jenessa Ramsoomair that brought the game within one as the clock counted down towards the end of the quarter.

The Cougars' forward line held strong against a determined Griffin attack, and refused any progression in favour of MacEwan. A quick pass from Abbey Wilkinson to Ramsoomair evened the score at 46 to wrap up the third.

Peak action came with the final 10 minutes of play, MRU and GMU back and forth, always staying within four no matter who was leading. The last two minutes saw Mount Royal take off as MacEwan faltered, unable to convert.

Jamie Lalor was one to watch tonight, showing why she is tied for second in Canada West for steals after putting up five tonight alone. Her defensive performance went past steals, grabbing eight rebounds as well.

Tanis Metcalfe was her usual self, putting up consistent and impressive numbers for the women with 12 points, two steals and three rebounds.

But Megan Wellinghurst was the all-around star tonight, with 14 points and six rebounds, it was her drive in the paint that secured the victory. Her consistent performance on both offense and defence earned her player of the game honours tonight.

The Cougars took their largest lead to end the game, with their hard work resulting in their first win of the regular season.

Both squads will meet again tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in Kenyon Court. Watch the game live on Canada West TV.

Go Cougars.

MHKY: REG (3) at MRU (5)

The Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey defeated the University of Regina Cougars, 5-3 in a chippy game at Flames Community Arena on Friday night.

Prior to puck drop, a moment of silence was held in honour Remembrance Day.

Regina came flying out of the gates early and appeared to score right of the opening faceoff, but the officials waved it off.

The officials had their hands full for tonight's tilt. The majority of stoppages were filled with pushing, shoving and unfriendly chatter.

MRU took a tripping penalty early and Regina took advantage.

Defenceman Brennan Riddle ripped a wrist shot from the left circle that rifled past Mount Royal netminder, Riley Sims, to give Regina an early lead.

MRU tied the game up at one, a few minutes later. Robbie Holmes centered the puck and Spencer Moe tapped it in past Adam Evanoff.

Shortly after, Mount Royal took the lead. Michael Ladyman capitalized off a feed from Connor Bouchard. The goal was Ladyman's first career Canada West goal.

Robbie Holmes added one more in the first. Holmes backhanded the puck over the pad of Evanoff in tight for a nifty goal.

In the second, Regina cut the lead to one. Bruce Platt squeaked one through the pads of Sims.

Regina then tied the game up with a point shot that fooled Sims. Scott Mickoski was credited the equalizer.

MRU regained the lead in the final frame. Kyle Walker's point shot deflected off the stick of Blake Stevenson and up and over Evanoff to make it a 4-3 game.

Riley Sawchuk added an empty netter to wrap things up.

Regina will get their shot at a rematch tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. Tickets are available here or you can watch live on Canada West TV.

MBB: GMU (58) at MRU (87)

An explosive showing for the men's basketball team in a dominant 85-52 win over the Grant MacEwan University Griffins in MRU's home opener.

The Cougars seemed to do everything right tonight, with every member of the roster seeing more than seven minutes of play time. Every member of the squad had fantastic off-ball positioning, always having one guy open and ready for a pass.

Holt Tomie was electric, making 13 in the first half with six rebounds, and finishing the night with a double-double on the stat sheet. Tomie finished with a huge 28 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a steal. Tonight he was five points below his career record, though he got here with 13 minutes less in play time.

Daniel Mulder also contributed to the team's take off, with eight points and five rebounds, shooting 75 per cent from the field in the first half of the game.

New face to the Cougars this season, Kevointe Watts, may have only put up 10 points but his presence was a defining factor in the win. Watts' energetic play style saw him consistently diving for loose balls and fighting for possession in every corner of the court. The playmaker had a great sense of when to attack himself and when to distribute to an open teammate.

Mount Royal had the lead for just over 38 of the 40 minutes played, only trailing in the opening moments of play.

MacEwan's Scottie Austin was a saving grace for the Griffins, never faltering and making 12 points and seven assists himself. Matthew Osunde had 10 points of his own, with eight rebounds, flirting with a double-double.

GMUs team spread the love on court and kept their energy high throughout the games entirety but fell short in the end.

Both teams are back in Kenyon Court tomorrow for a Saturday night rematch, tipping off at 7 p.m.
