WSOC: GMU (2) at MRU (0)
MRU fell to the Grant MacEwan University Griffins today, losing 2 to 0 at Mount Royal's Stadium Field.
MacEwan's Samantha Gouveia and Salma Kamel were both able to capitalize for the Griffins within two minutes of each other nearing the end of the first half. Gouvea with a rebound reception and tip in, and Kamel with a short chip shot over the head of MRU's
Lizzy Knight.
Knight was able to put up incredible stats in her debut game for the Cougars with 11 saves against an aggressive Griffin offense. However, she wasn't the only one with an impressive defensive performance this afternoon.
Alexi Watson led the back line, making three of the six defensive saves for the MRU women. Alongside was
Isabella Chirico who demonstrated she truly is the one to watch this year for the Cougars.
Chirico stayed solid against persistent attacks from GMU, remaining level headed and consistently found her teammates feet through a swarm of burgundy jerseys. Her aggressive guarding and smart play granted her today's player of the game.
Both the Griffins and the Cougars pushed through the last minutes of the game with increasing pressure and desire to score, but MRU's
Sharnae Sedres was the one picking up a yellow card in the 82nd minute, getting her sent off the pitch.
The women are back this Friday at five p.m. when they travel across town for a Crowchild Classic face-off against the University of Calgary Dinos.
