Cougars unveil upgraded Al Bohonus Hall of Champions

The Al Bohonus Hall of Champions on the lower level of Mount Royal's Recreation Center received an upgrade over the summer. The project included a tribute panel to Al Bohonus, historic ACAC and CCAA Champions, Mount Royal University student-athlete awards and U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian awards. Each wall panel is uniquely designed to evoke pride and inspiration in all viewers while effectively communicating Mount Royal's storied history in the ACAC and CCAA with an emphasis on the expectation of future Canada West and U SPORTS championships.

Bohonus, a widely regarded influential figure within Alberta and Mount Royal for his perseverance in the growth and development of collegiate sports, is highlighted with a large-scale photo and biography in the redesigned hallway. Under Bohonus' leadership from 1979 to 1994, the Cougars earned 41 provincial college championships and seven national titles. In 1978 Bohonus stepped in as Athletic Director, before his untimely passing in 1995. Four years later, Mount Royal received the CCAA 25th Anniversary Overall Sport Supremacy Award highlighting the institution and Bohonus' achievements.

"On behalf of my family and I, we'd like to thank Mount Royal for extending my father's legacy and enhancing his impact with this tribute wall," Amber Bohonus, Al's daughter said. "My dad never felt like what he did was a job and really loved his work with Mount Royal because he was so passionate about student-athletes succeeding.

"My hope is that my family and I can always honour and share his legacy with Mount Royal and the future generations ahead of us to continue the work my father was so passionate about."

The Al Bohonus Hall of Champions upgrade was completed in time for recreation and student-athletes to rejoin MRU's recreation facilities, sparking a renewed interest in the University's athletic history.

"We are excited to welcome our athletes and Cougars fans back to campus to view the newly redone Al Bohonus Hall of Champions," Karla Karch, Director, Cougars Athletics and Recreation said. "This hallway is where we are able to pay tribute to our history. Mount Royal has a long and storied past from our ACAC time to now being Canada West and U SPORTS members and we're so excited to recognize that.

"It's important that we show our current athletes and recruits who we are, where we've come from and how much they will enjoy their time with us as we continue to move forward. Enjoy the hallway, it's a fantastic tribute to our history and to Cougars athletics."

Mount Royal staff, students, faculty, alumni and fans are encouraged to view the Al Bohonus Hall of Champions that borders the west court of the triple gym in the Mount Royal Recreation Centre to learn more about MRU's athletic accomplishments.
