Tianna Ko plucked a turnover in her own end and went coast to coast just 21 seconds into the third period to score the only goal the Cougars would need in a 3-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins in Canada West women's hockey action on Friday night.

The Cougars scored two late goals inside the final three minutes to salt away their fifth win of the season, earning the new record of 5-1-1. MacEwan falls to 2-5-0 with the loss.

McEwan put up 20 shots on MRU goaltender Zoe De Beauville, but outside of one hot shot from Griffin's forward Mackenzie Dachuk, it was a relatively routine night of saves for De Beauville during her second shutout of the season.

Ko finished with two goals for the Cougars after wiring home Courtney Kollman's cross-seam pass for the insurance marker with 2:46 left. Mackenzie Butz added MRU's third tally just 1:10 later when her point blast found its way past a screened Griffin's defenceman.

The Cougars continue their road trip up North on Saturday when they visiting the University of Alberta Pandas at 2 p.m. in Clare Drake Arena. Catch all the action on Canada West TV, presented by Co-op.

Despite the University of Calgary winning the first set of the women's volleyball season, the Mount Royal Cougars battled back by taking the next three, winning 3-1(22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-16) on Friday at Jack Simpson Gym.

Cougars outside hitters Jessica Osczevski and Haley Roe dominated the second set for Mount Royal, combining for 11 points. Osczevski led the Cougars in kills with 17, and Roe followed close behind with 16.

The Dinos and Cougars went back and forth to start the third set, but ultimately Mount Royal's offensive attack dominated the game. Three attacking errors by Calgary and two kills from the Cougars would seal the set for Mount Royal.

Fourth-year Cougar Quinn Pelland picked up where she left off in 2019, contributing 10 assists in the fourth set to secure the win for Mount Royal. Pelland tallied a total of 42 assists throughout the game.

The Cougars look to continue their success again on Saturday at the Jack Simpson Gym. The first serve is at 6:30 p.m. and can be found on Canada West TV, presented by Co-op.

The Dinos men's volleyball team hit the ground running to start the 2021 season, defeating the Cougars 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-22) on Friday night at Jack Simpson Gym.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle with both teams performing well out the gate. Near the end of the first set, the Dinos were able to pull away. Although the Cougars started strong they could not maintain their initial hitting efficiency and the Dinos prevailed in a tightly contested first set 25-21.

The Dinos were able to build off their initial success in the first half and easily took the second set 25-14. The Cougars however would not go down without a fight. After falling down early in the third set 19-10, the Cougars roared back with powerful kills by Chris Byam and Max Haronga. Despite their best efforts, Mount Royal quickly found themselves in a game point situation down 24-19. The Cougars rallied and made it 24-22, however, it was Hamish Hazelden and the Dinos who would have the final say.

The Dinos will host the Cougars again on Saturday night with a 5 p.m. start at the Jack Simpson Gym. The game can be watched live on Canada West TV, presented by Co-op.
