The Mount Royal University Cougars take the win after defeating the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 82-76 in a fast-paced, high intensity game at Kenyon Court.

Both teams showed agility, speed and dominance on the hardwood, keeping the game neck-n'-neck to the very last moment.

Cougars captain Nick Tancon, along with Nate Petrone and Holt Tomie demonstrated their chemistry and skills throughout the game. Tancon put up 12 points and eight rebounds, while Petrone had 17 points for the Cougars.

Even with those impressive performances, Tomie was the star of the show, making 23 points and four rebounds after having to sit for a portion of the game due to an injury.

MRU wasn't the only team with notable athletes at Kenyon Court. Pronghorn's De'Andrae Pierre went on a run in the fourth, working to close the gap and save his team in the final minutes of play. He began the fourth quarter with four points but ended the game with 16, leading Lethbridge in scoring.

Jeff Rodehutskors also made a mark for himself, putting up a double-double on the stat sheet with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The high point of the night came with the last three minutes of play. Lethbridge led the Cougars 76-75. Pierre converted a beautiful lay-up and followed up the play with a three from way beyond the arch.

But it was Petrone who finished the game and sealed the win for the Cougars after receiving a long ball from Chase Bohne. Bohne stepped in to make a steal and launch the ball into the offensive zone where Petrone was waiting.

"I thought we did very well, battling against adversity in the second half to come out with a big win," said MRU player of the game, Patrick Vandervelden.

Vandervelden put up nine rebounds for the Cougars and eight points to help support the win. He helped the team convert 44 points in the paint in tonight's game and stepped up as a leader on the hardwood for the entirety of play.

The Cougars and Pronghorns play their second game of the weekend tomorrow evening, with a 6 p.m. tip off in Kenyon Court. Make sure to catch the game live or at Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

WBB: LET (65) at MRU (56)

In their first matchup of the weekend, the Mount Royal University Cougars fell to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 56-65 in a low scoring but high intensity game.

The Cougars had a strong first half showing for their home crowd fans, with the magic trio of Bella Gaulden, Tanis Metcalfe and Jamie Lalor accounting for 20 of the team's 26 points.

Lethbridge wasn't far behind, with Haily Weaver and Savannah McMahon leading their team in scoring, combining for 14 points. Weaver went on to put up a double double for the game with her finishing stat line reading 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The arena could feel the energy on the hardwood, with consistent pressure from both teams battling it out in the paint. Mount Royal was able to finish with 24 points under the rim and 41 rebounds.

Going into the final minute of play, the intensity of play couldn't have been higher. The Cougars trailed by nine. Martens charged the court for a fast-paced rebound falling beautifully through the netting.

Pronghorn's Jessica Haenni came from out of nowhere, finishing the first half with only two points but finished with a massive 21 to her name.

The Cougars had led the game for 30 minutes of play time, taking the first three quarters. They were able to end the third with a 10 point lead over the Pronghorns. But Lethbridge was able to fight for the remaining 15 minutes of play, scoring 22 points and winning them the game.

Despite the loss, MRU had a brilliant showing by Cougars player of the game, Lalor.

"Lethbridge played a very good game tonight," said Lalor. "At the end of the day, they just got more buckets than us, so tomorrow we have to come out and try and get a couple more stops."

Lalor finished the game with six rebounds, 10 points and three steals while repeatedly demonstrating textbook footwork and playmaking on the court.

Tomorrow the teams will match up again for their second game of the weekend. The women tip off at 4 p.m. at Kenyon Court. Catch the game live at Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
