University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated Mount Royal Cougars 7-2 in the second game of the season at Calgary Flames Community Arena.

MRU came out strong in the first period opening up the scoring less than three minutes in. A slapper by Connor Blake from the blue line beat U of A goalie Nick Schneider blocker side.

U of A answered back six minutes later by capitalizing on a short-handed two on one chance, tying the game. Nolan Volcan sped up the left side of the ice, passing the puck to Ryan Hughes in front, who beat Riley Morris on the glove side.

The Cougars took back the lead a minute later with a scramble in front of the U of A net ending up on the stick of Robbie Holmes. Holmes, waiting on the right side of the net tucked home his first powerplay goal of the year.

With 4.7 seconds left in the first, Wyatt McLeod of the Golden Bears tied it up during a four on four opportunity. This opened the gates for U of A's scoring spree as they scored six unanswered goals.

The teams were dead even going into the second period; 10 shots apiece, tied two-two. The Golden Bears started the period with a four on three. Less than 30 seconds into the period, U of A took the lead with a powerplay goal from Volcan.

On another powerplay, U of A sprung out of their zone, creating a three on two. Dylan Plouffe shot a wrister beating Morris glove side.

A stretch pass from Clayton Kirichenko inside their own zone to Daneel Lategan put the Golden Bears 5-2 going into the third period.

During the third period, U of A scored two more goals on Riley Sims. Plouffe scored a powerplay goal from the point less than four minutes in and a Lategan finished on a two on one chance with 15 seconds left in the game.

The Golden Bears caused numerous turnovers, transitioned efficiently and effectively from end to end, creating lots of offensive zone time and shots on goal. MRU struggled to get things set up in the offensive zone after the first period.

The Cougars look to redeem themselves next Friday night on the road at Trinity Western University at 7:00pm. Watch the game on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies today, winning 3-1. The game was accompanied by high emotions and intense play resulting in not only six yellow cards, but four red cards between the two teams.

The game opened with back and forth steady play in center field with constant changes in possession. Tthe tone shifted quickly as a penalty kick was awarded in the last minutes of the first half for the Cougars after the ball caught the hand of a Huskies player in the box.

Moe El Gandour stepped up to take the shot, firing it low and left with confidence to put the men up 1-0 in the 40th minute of play.

The tension rose immediately at the start of the second half when MRU's Miguel Da Rocha was awarded a yellow card, followed shortly by a yellow for David Can. Within moments of the Cougars second card, Saskatchewan put themselves up on the board after Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei converted on a free kick from the top of the box, tying the game up at 1.

Just moment's after their goal, the Huskies were awarded their first yellow of the match with Ahmed Mohammad.

This shifted momentum in favour of the Cougars when El Gandour scored his second of the afternoon as a result of a stunning cross from Josh Flaksman. The play put him in the perfect spot for a header to redirect the ball into the net.

Play grew increasingly aggressive after Saskatchewan's Luke Mackie claimed a yellow himself in the 68th, followed closely by Drake Rendle for the Cougars getting a yellow of his own, both after fierce tackle attempts.

Flaksman assisted El Gandour in completing his hat trick after a stunning pass to the top of the box. El Gandour had a perfect pass reception and sent the ball off his left foot and into the top of the goal, bringing the score to 3-1 in favour of MRU.

The action really came in the final minutes  of extra time when all four red cards were awarded.

The first went to Hafiz Mahjor after a failed tackle attempt in center field, sending him off immediately and leaving the Cougars to play a man down.

Two went to Saskatchewan's Mackie and Fraser McLeod and one to Mount Royal's goalie, Sterling Kerr, in an aggressive scrum involving almost the full line up from both teams. After all three men had left the field, both SSK and MRU finished out the game playing nine-a-side.

The Cougars will meet the Huskies for a rematch tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Stadium Field. Make sure to catch the game in person or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op!
