CALGARY - The second ranked Cougars will host the fifth ranked Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack this Friday at 7:00 PM MST on Kenyon Court. This marks the first time Mount Royal has hosted a Canada West medal match at home since joining the conference and U SPORTS.
This winner takes all match-up is not only for a bronze medal, but the last berth to the U SPORTS National Championship next week at the University of Calgary. Last weekend, the Cougars fell to the University of Alberta Pandas in a hard fought three game series and the Wolfpack were bested by the number one ranked Trinity Western Spartans. The Pandas and Spartans move on to the gold medal game and the national championship.
Earlier in the season, the Wolfpack traveled to MRU as both teams battled for a weekend split. The Cougars took Friday night in a 3-0 set sweep highlighted by 14 kills and two errors on 21 attempts for an incredible 0.571 attack efficiency from
Haley Roe. TRU then evened the score with a 3-1 set victory led by Kendra Finch who finished the game with an impressive match high with 14 kills and 14 digs. After a strong season, Finch was honoured by winning the 2020 Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award and being named to the first all-star team.
After an historic 21-3 record in the regular season and setting many program milestones, the Cougars will look to cement their place with their first ever bronze medal and trip to the National Championship.
