WBB: Dinos ride early lead to victory

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos won the final matchup of the season against the Mount Royal University Cougars, marking the end of the season for the Cougars. 

The Dinos took the first two quarters 21-12 and 19-16. The Cougars made a comeback in third, taking it 17-13, but the Dinos rebounded to finish the fourth 21-13. The final score was 74-58. 

The Cougars marked the evening with the Shoot for the Cure fundraiser as well as their Seniors Night, awarding each of their graduating players with a bouquet and their framed jerseys. 

Mount Royal opened the scoring with a layup from Charity Marlatt, quickly responded to by the Dinos with five points of their own. Calgary was setting the pace for the match as they outran the Cougars, earning a strong early lead. Mount Royal's Marnie Garner earned several points to close the gap, but they were outshot by the Dinos who capitalized on strong communications. 

Calgary widened their lead with some quick early points, but the Cougars regrouped to earn five successive points. The teams were trading control of the court as Mount Royal worked to push their offensive plays. Marlatt led the scoring for the quarter, but despite their renewed efforts, the Dinos held their lead into the halftime. 

The Cougars found their pace in the third, earning some strong points early on. The Dinos snapped back with some quick layups from Laura Grabe to further their lead. In the final minutes, the entire Cougars team rallied to earn a series of back-to-back points, closing the gap to eight. 

Mount Royal was slowly chipping away at the Dinos lead as the fourth opened. Calgary pulled away for a moment with a strong three-pointer from Liene Stalidzane, but the Cougars narrowed it to just a four point lead after a quick comeback. However, Calgary rallied to pulled some fast maneuvers, earning a string of points that pushed them to securing their victory at 74-58. 

This marked the final game of the season for Mount Royal with a record of 5-15.
