CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars made a comeback to split the weekend against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. Celebrating their seniors' night and the final hosting match of the season, they took three straight sets to win the night.Â
The set scores were: 25-21, 25-23, and 25-9.Â
For Mount Royal, Chris Byam led with 15 points and 13 kills, followed by Luis Lange with 11 points and six kills. For Winnipeg, Ethan Duncan led with ten points, six of which were kills. Daniel Thiessen followed with 9.5 points and eight kills.Â
Mount Royal opened the scoring with a precise kill from Jace Martin. They traded points, the Wesmen blocking several of the Cougars' attempts to score. At ten points, the Cougars pulled ahead into a slight lead with a kill from Lange. They held strong, landing several aces to advance their lead. Winnipeg narrowed the gap to four points with a series of blocks, but Mount Royal sealed the set with a service ace from Keal Prince.Â
Both sides were struggling a bit with their momentum as the second began, until the Wesmen landed a few points to solidify themselves. Mount Royal struggled to pull ahead once more as Winnipeg was matching each of their points. Byam set off a series of kills for his team which pulled them into a slight lead. The Wesmen pushed to stay on their tail and it was a close finish as Byam finished the set with a kill.Â
Mount Royal's Matt Saly opened the third with a quick kill, followed by one from Byam. They found a strong momentum to take a healthy lead early in the set. Winnipeg was landing several kills of their own to chip away at the lead, but were struggling against the defenders' strikes. After a long series of kills from the Cougars, a block from Trent Mounter ended the match with a straight sweep for Mount Royal.Â
This marked the final regular conference match for the Cougars who will now move onto the playoffs in the coming weeks.
