WHKY: Mount Royal takes game-winning shot in double overtime

CALGARY - The quarter finals kicked off with a roar for the Mount Royal University Cougars and the University of Regina Cougars at Flames Community Arenas. After struggling through a heavy stalemate, the game was won in double overtime with a goal from Mount Royal's Jayden Thorpe.

For Mount Royal, forward Amy Tatum led with four shots on net with Thorpe taking two shots and one goal. For Regina, captain Jaycee Magwood and defenseman Tamara McVannel led with five shots each.

The game showed an evenly matched momentum for both teams as they struggled to find an advantage through the periods. Despite heavy efforts from Regina, Mount Royal's goalie Kaitlyn Ross, ranked second in the league, wasn't letting anything through her defences. Regina's goalie Jane Kish was equally as stubborn, blocking 22 attempts made on net.

In double overtime, Mount Royal's captain Daria O'Neill took a shot from near the blue line. Jayden Thorpe was just out front of the net, finding a perfect opportunity to tip it in, earning her first goal of the season. The Mount Royal bench piled into a hug to celebrate finally breaking the stalemate.

Regina's head coach Sarah Hodges said she believes they put forth a strong effort, but just needed to find a good pace for themselves.

"I think we just had a slow start. We have to come out from the start and be ready to go. At times we had some good offense, but through the game were just inconsistent, so we need to work at being better at that."

Mount Royal's coach Scott Rivett was proud of his team, recognizing that their results were also inconsistent, but in the end they made it work.

"To be honest it was just kind of about dialing in and just trying to find some more energy to manage the puck… At the end of the day Kaitlyn Ross made some saves and we really needed her to. Second and third period, she made some key saves and got us into overtime and kind of got our game back again."

The teams will face off again on Saturday, February 15th at 2:30PM MST. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
