CALGARY - The Manitoba Bisons faced off for the final time this season against the Mount Royal Cougars at Flames Community Arenas.
Manitoba held onto the lead for most of the game, taking their first goal in the second period. Despite the visitors' strong defenses, the Cougars took the evening with a 2-1 victory, scoring both their goals in the third period.
The first period started off with some real energy as the teams were looking to make an impact early on. Taking advantage of a power play, Cougars' Tianna Ko took a shot on Bisons goalie Amanda Schubert who knocked it away with her skate. Manitoba found a couple of their own power play opportunities, pushing hard on the Mount Royal defenses. However, neither team was able to make a goal by the buzzer.
The second period was a struggle for control as both teams pushed for an advantage. Just after the 15 minute mark, Manitoba's Mekaela Fisher broke the stalemate, earning her fourth goal of the season. Coming right out of a face-off, forward Jordyn Zacharias fired it to Fisher who shot right past Cougars goalie Cassie Shokar. The Cougars attempted a comeback in the final minutes, but the Bisons continued to fend off their plays.
The third was a back and forth effort between the two teams as the Bisons tried to maintain their lead. Mount Royal's Anna Purschke found an opening halfway through the period, shooting the puck past Schubert to tie the score. Just a few minutes later, there was a scuffle for control of the puck near the pole of the Bisons' net. Schubert was defending the territory well, but Cougars defender Emma Bergesen tapped it past all the sticks to land just past the line.
The Cougars held onto their comeback lead to end the night 2-1, sweeping the weekend.
Mount Royal will next face off against the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Friday, January 10th, at 7 p.m. MST in Edmonton. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
