CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos were hosted at the Flames Community Arenas for a rematch against their hometown rivals, the Mount Royal University Cougars. Mount Royal was hoping to secure a spot in the playoffs while Calgary looked to maintain their standing.Â
For Mount Royal, Breanne Trotter and Kate Hufnagel led with two shots and one goal each, while Maddison Toppe held a total of six shots. For Calgary, Sara Craven led with four shots and one goal, followed by Elizabeth Lang with five shots and one assist.Â
The first period was a tough battle for control of the ice, neither side letting up. Mount Royal was finding more opportunities on net, but were thwarted by Calgary's goalie Kelsey Roberts. They were unable to break the stalemate by the final buzzer, ending with no points on the board.
Just three minutes into the second, Mount Royal's Hufnagel received a quick pass from Kennedy Bozek and swept the puck past Roberts. The Dinos responded quickly with some shots of their own, but were unable to defeat Cougars goalie Kaitlyn Ross. Defences were high on both sides, not allowing any further goals to sneak through.Â
After a tough battle for control, Craven snuck through the defenders to sweep past Ross with assistance from defenseman Merissa Dawson. The teams were matching each other's moves, unable to sneak past to make many attempts on net. The tie held and led into overtime.Â
After a round of 4-v-4 failed to settle the score, the game slipped into double overtime. After just over a minute of play, Trotter swept past the Dinos defenders on a break away to flick the puck past Roberts, winning the night for the Cougars.Â
The Cougars will play next against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Friday, February 7th, at the Flames Community Arenas. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
