CALGARY - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were hosted by the Mount Royal University Cougars on Kenyon Court. The Cougars were looking to seal their spot in the playoffs, but the Huskies had other plans, taking the evening 3-1.Â
The set scores were: 25-19, 13-25, 25-20, and 25-22.
For Saskatchewan, Daulton Sinoski led with 17 points, 13 of which were kills. For Mount Royal, Chris Byam led with 15 points, also with 13 kills.Â
The Huskies opened the scoring for the night with a quick service ace from Connor Murray. They were neck-and-neck until Saskatchewan pulled ahead at seven points to hold onto a healthy lead. Mount Royal fought to bring the score within just three points, but the Huskies capitalized on kill opportunities to run away with the score. A quick kill from Sinoski sealed the set.Â
Mount Royal started off strong in the second, nailing the first few points. Byam landed a series of kills to hold them in a wide lead, holding at least seven points ahead. Huskies' Cole Burkart was landing kills of his own to keep the team going strong, but the Cougars held onto their lead to win the set.Â
The third was a battle of trading points for both sides as they fought for an advantage. As they tied at 14 points, Saskatchewan began making some strong blocks to take a narrow lead. The Cougars fought to sneak around the blockers, able to match their score once more at 19. Mount Royal tried to turn the Huskies' blocking against them, but were unable to close the score before Saskatchewan made the set point.Â
They were trading points in the fourth, neither able to pull ahead by much. For every point the Huskies pulled ahead, it seemed the Cougars were able to match in the next play. Mount Royal's Trent Mounter was landing several kills to keep them in step while Huskies' Sinoski fought back with his own. Saskatchewan pulled ahead in the final three points, winning the night with a sturdy block.Â
The two teams will face off once more for the season on Saturday, February 1st, on Kenyon Court. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
