MHKY: Cougars take hard-fought victory in shootout

CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars battled against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns for the final time this season at Flames Community Arenas. After entering a shootout, the Cougars won the night 4-3.

The Cougars began the evening with Senior Night celebrations to send off their graduating players Jesse Lees, Connor Chartier, Chris Gerrie and Connor Rankin.

For Mount Royal, Gerrie led with five shots on net and one goal, followed by Andrew Fyten with five shots and two assists. For Lethbridge, Taylor Fisher and Luke Coleman led with four shots and one goal each.

The game opened with a tough battle for control. Mount Royal's Brad Kennedy fired a shot past Pronghorns goalie Jack Burgart after receiving a quick pass from Allan MacPherson. At the halfway point, Ryley Lindgren found an opportunity of his own on a powerplay to steal past the defenders. Just a minute later, Pronghorns' Torrin White received a pass from Michael Clarke to fire his fifth goal of the season into the net. The period ended with a 2-1 Cougars advantage.

The second period was a fiery struggle for control of the ice as both sides met sturdy defences. Each side was consistently being tripped up by power plays, allowing several opportunities to their opponents. With just seven seconds remaining in the period, Mount Royal's Gerrie broke the stalemate with an unassisted goal, pulling into a 3-1 lead.

The Pronghorns set the pace for the third, slowly pushing back the Cougars offensive plays. Lethbridge's Fisher earned his second goal of the season with an assist from Clarke. Shortly after, his teammate Coleman snuck past Cougars goalie Riley Morris with assistance from Dalton Sward. Both goals were made on power plays. They matched the score at 3 to pull the game into overtime.

After an unsuccessful tie-breaker, the game snuck into a shootout. Lethbridge failed to make any goals, but Mount Royal's Rankin and Fyten landed one each, winning the night for the Cougars.

Mount Royal will play next against the University of Calgary for their history Crowchild Classic meetup on Thursday, January 30th at the Scotiabank Saddledome. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
