CALGARY - The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack met the Mount Royal University Cougars for the final time this season on Kenyon Court.
The set scores were: 25-16, 25-24, 25-21, 25-22.
For Mount Royal, senior hitter Trent Mounter led with 22.5 points including 19 kills, followed by Luis Lange with 14.5 points and 14 kills. For Thompson Rivers, senior hitter Joshua Mullaney led with 13 points including 12 kills, followed by Brody Kopec with nine points and seven kills.
The WolfPack opened the scoring, taking an early lead by six points. Mount Royal was able to match half their points with several kills, but were being outshone by the WolfPack. The Cougars were struggling to find a comfortable pace. Thompson Rivers capitalized on these advantages to hold onto a steady lead to take the set.
The Cougars were able to find some momentum in the second set, taking a slight lead that was soon matched by the WolfPack. They traded points, neither side able to break away. Some missteps made by Mount Royal allowed Thompson Rivers an advantage into the lead. However, the Cougars soon found their feet again to land a handful of kills to come out on top.
The teams seemed evenly matched in the third, once again unable to find a steady advantage. Mount Royal's Mounter was able to hit a kill that set off a fresh energy for the team, taking a slight lead. A kill from WolfPack's Sam Taylor Parks brought them close to closing the gap, but the Cougars held their lead to win the set.
Mount Royal took an early lead in the fourth. Thompson Rivers put forth every effort to narrow the gap to just three points. They were capitalizing on several attack errors by Mount Royal, but were often being blocked for their own kills. Mounter went for the final kill to end the match after a tough battle.
The Cougars will play next against the University of Calgary Dinos in a classic matchup on Thursday, January 23rd. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
