WBB: Cougars take the night, 78-74

CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars opened their weekend with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Kenyon Court.

The Cougars walked away with a last-minute victory of 78-74. This marked history for the team as the moment they broke their record for most wins in a season since joining the USPORTS league.

The scores for each quarter were: 11-9, 23-15, 10-23, and 34-27.

For Lethbridge, Kacie Bosch set the pace with 18 points, followed by Amy Mazutinec with 13. For Mount Royal, Maddie Hooper led with 23 points, followed by Jenika Martens with 15.

The first quarter began quite slow as both teams worked to find a good pace. Pronghorns' Jessica Zarowny opened the scoring after three minutes of play, closely followed by Asnate Fomina landing a jumper. Mount Royal soon met their points at five then slipped into the lead with four minutes remaining. They traded points, matching each other's steps, until the Cougars' Marnie Garner stole a quick jumper in the final minute to solidify their lead.

Leading into the second, Mount Royal was capitalizing on rebounds. Lethbridge was staying close on the Cougars' heels, briefly taking the lead by a single point at the five and a half minute mark. However, the Cougars landed several jumpers to retake their lead into the double digits, ending the quarter with a strong ten point lead.

Lethbridge started the third strong with a layup from fourth year guard Bosch. They dominated the court for several minutes, narrowing the score gap to just two points. The Cougars were struggling to maintain their lead as the Pronghorns were repeatedly matching their scores. With less than a minute remaining, Lethbridge's Mazutinec landed a three pointer to steal the lead.

Mount Royal's Hooper opened the scoring for the final quarter to tie the score at 47. They were matching points with each stride, either side unable to break the cycle. Three minutes in, Hooper pushed the Cougars into the lead with a swift three pointer. They widened the gap until the Pronghorns landed some quick layups, narrowing it once more. With less than a minute remaining, they closed the score to just a single point difference until Mount Royal's Abbey Gillette landed the final point of the night, solidifying their victory.

The teams will face off next in Lethbridge on Saturday, January 17th. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
