Reclaiming the weekend, Cougars win 2-0

CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars hosted the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a tough match on Saturday evening at Flames Community Arena. The two teams seemed evenly matched, but in the end the Cougars took it 2-0.

The first period was a lot of back and forth as each team vied for control of the ice. The Pronghorns goalie Alicia Anderson was holding steady as the Cougars pressed forward. Anderson holds a save percentage of 0.946 for the season while Mount Royal's rookie goalie Kaitlyn Ross competes with a 0.971 percent.

The first period closed with a stalemate at 0-0.

The two teams were struggling to find an advantage as the score remained tied at nothing through the second. It seemed for a moment that Mount Royal had a chance to pull ahead on a powerplay early on, but was unable to seal the deal.

Cougars' forward Kate Hufnagel finally found her mark shortly after puck drop in the third. With an assist from Tori Williams and Daria O'Neill, Hufnagel earned her second goal of the season. Lethbridge was fighting back hard, maintaining a tough defence. Despite their efforts, Mount Royal's third year forward Andrea Sanderson snuck through to score her first goal of the season.

The Pronghorns made a strong effort to close the gap, but couldn't skate past Ross and her defenders. The game closed with a Cougars victory of 2-0. They now stand at a ranking of 6-4 with 18 points. Lethbridge stands at a ranking of 6-3 with 19 points.

The Cougars face off against the University of Calgary Dinos on Thursday, November 14th. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
