CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars and the Victoria Vikes faced off for the final time in 2019 on Kenyon court. Following a defeat from the Cougars on Friday, the Vikes took back the weekend with a 73-60 victory.
Victoria's Ashlyn Day led her team with 19 points with seven out of 16 attempted field goals landed and a 100 percent free throw rating. Mount Royal's second year guard Maddison Hooper came away with 15 points and six of her 13 attempted field goals made.Â
The two teams seemed to be putting forth equal efforts, matching each others' points. The Cougars were scrambling a bit with their offensive, but Maddison Hooper was able to make an early 3-pointer, the only of the quarter. It ended 18-13 for Victoria thanks to a series of points from Calli McMillan, pulling them into the lead.
Mount Royal's Sarah Rinskey opened the second with a quick jumper, followed shortly by Victoria's Haliy Weaver, stealing a jumper of her own. Victoria held onto their lead, maintaining a lead of more than three points, despite some strong shots from Mount Royal. With 14 seconds remaining, Mount Royal's Ella Stanley landed a 3-pointer to narrow the gap. The quarter ended 38-36 for the Vikes.Â
The Cougars faced an early foul which gave Victoria's Ashlyn Day an opportunity to land two good free throws less than 20 seconds into the third. Victoria continued to hold the advantage throughout the quarter, though Mount Royal landed several free throws of their own to narrow the score gap. Mount Royal's Charity Marlatt scored a layup in the last 20 seconds, bringing the score to 49-48 for the Vikes.Â
The teams traded points for the first few minutes until Victoria's Morgan Roskelley landed a 3-pointer, pulling them into a safe lead once more. A few foul calls on the Cougars gave the advantage to the Vikes as they pulled into an 11 point lead. Despite the setback, Mount Royal managed to break their average of 58 points per game. Victoria's Morgan Roskelley nailed a freethrow to score the final points of the match, closing at 73-60.
The Cougars will resume Canada West matches in the new year, hosted by the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Friday, January 3. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
