CALGARY - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were hosted by the Mount Royal University Cougars for the final time in 2019 at Flames Community Arena. After a tough match, the Huskies took the game 3-2.
The final shots were 37-28 in favour of Saskatchewan. Mount Royal's Connor Rankin found five shots on net while the Huskies' Gordie Ballhorn led his team with seven.
The game began with some fresh energy following last night's match, both teams ready to make a mark. The Huskies opened the scoring with a goal from Andrew Johnson, his second of the season, after just five minutes of play. A quick pass from Dakota Boutin landed him the opportunity to sneak past Cougars goalie Wyatt Hoflin. The Cougars put forth some real effort throughout the period, but were unable to close the gap before the buzzer.
Saskatchewan's Levi Cable scored a quick goal just two minutes into the second, his fourth of the season. It was a tic-tac-toe maneuver between Cable, Johnson and Layne Young. It was a heated period as both teams were trading power plays. Mount Royal found an advantage and Sean Richards swept the puck into the net with assistance from Connor Chartier and Jamal Watson. The period ended with a Huskies leading 2-1.
It was a struggle for control of the ice in the third. Huskies' Layne Young earned his seventh goal of the season thanks to a pass from Johnson. It took some time for the Cougars to recover the play. They found their moment with less than two minutes remaining, Chris Gerrie taking a pass from Richards to slip past Huskies goalie Taran Kozun. However, they couldn't find another opening in the final minutes.
Saskatchewan held onto their lead to take the game 3-2.
The Cougars will be hosted by the University of Alberta Golden Bears for their final match of the year on Saturday, December 28, at 7 p.m. MST. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
