CALGARY - The University of Alberta Golden Bears swept the weekend against the Mount Royal University Cougars, taking the final match with three straight sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-18).
For the Golden Bears, third year outside hitter Jackson Kennedy led with 11 kills while fourth year setter Max Elgert came away with 26 assists.
Fifth year outside hitter Trent Mounter set the pace for the Cougars with eight kills while Keal Prince led with 19 assists. Alberta now stands at third in the Canada West rankings with 8-2 while Mount Royal sits at seventh with 4-8.
The Golden Bears started off strong with some quick kills, taking a five point lead. Mount Royal was making a slow comeback as Alberta continued to lead the set, holding a heavy point advantage. They took the set easily, 25-14.
Mount Royal found some new energy in the second, managing to avoid a wide lead for Alberta. They weren't able to sneak ahead themselves, but kept it a close score gap, ending 25-20 for the Golden Bears.
The third set was a match of trading points, the Cougars not letting their opponents a moment to breath. The score was tied 10-10 until Alberta finally snuck back into the lead. Cougars kept up the strong energy, but were unable to find the advantage. Third set finished 25-18.
This marked the final game of 2019 for the Cougars. They will be hosted by the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, January 10th, at 8 p.m PST. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
