CALGARY - Mount Royal University won the weekend against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, taking both nights 4-1.
Cougars' Brad Kennedy and Connor Chartier set the pace for the first half with their consistent goals while the Thunderbirds dominated the third. Mount Royal's goalie Riley Morris made a total of 22 saves while UBC's Patrick Dea made three and Rylan Toth made 20.
The Cougars took an early lead as Kennedy swept past the Thunderbirds' Dea to earn his third goal of the season. Just a minute later, Chartier received a pass from Nolan Yaremko and fired it into the net. Barely giving UBC time to breathe, Kennedy once again capitalized on a prime opportunity, bringing the Cougars to a 3-0 lead.
Both teams traded shots throughout the second, struggling for control of the ice. Cougars' Morris had made 15 saves by the end of the period. Working on fresh legs, Rylan Toth made 14 saves in the second. With just two minutes remaining in the period, Chartier rebounded a pass from Jamal Watson into the net to secure their four point lead.
Halfway through the third, Thunderbirds' Kyle Becker scored his second of the season, earning them a spot on the board. As the game approached the final buzzer, UBC pushed to make another mark on the score. However, Morris had other plans and deflected any further attempts made.
The night closed with 27-23 shots in favour of Mount Royal.
The Cougars will host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, November 29th, at 7 p.m. MST at the Flames Community Arena. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
