CALGARY - The women's Crowchild classic rivalry dropped it's final game of the week on Friday night. It was a tough battle between Mount Royal University Cougars and University of Calgary Dinos, but in the end, the Dinos took the night.
The puck dropped and the two teams began with some hard energy. Mount Royal was showing some real determination, gaining 11 shots on net to Calgary's five by the end of the period. The game was at a stalemate of 0-0 as the first buzzer rang.
Second period had a slow start on both sides, the teams taking more of a defensive stance. The Dinos were making the most of their further five shots on net, one of them finding the back of the net. Fourth year defenseman Paige Michalenko earned her third goal of the season with an assist from Dana Wood. Mount Royal returned fire, putting heavy pressure on the defensive line, giving them everything they had until the buzzer. It wrapped up with 13-5 shots in favour of Mount Royal.
The Cougars were finding some opportunities on the Dinos net as the game snaked towards its end. However, they were unable to sneak past Calgary's goalie Kelsey Roberts, who has a save ratio of 0.950% this season. The game closed with a Dinos victory of 1-0.
Calgary's Michalenko, Delaney Frey, Rachel Paul, and Holly Reuther earned two shots each on net. Mount Royal's Kate Scidmore led her team with seven shots, followed by Mackenzie Butz, Camryn Amundson, and Anna Purschke with three each. Dinos goalie Roberts made 28 saves to the Cougars' Cassie Shokar's 14.
The Cougars will play again on Friday, November 22nd, hosted by the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
