CALGARY - The classic Calgary rivalry dropped once more on Thursday evening between the Mount Royal University Cougars and the University of Calgary Dinos. Both teams were eager to leave an impression coming fresh from a difficult last weekend, but the Cougars took it in the end after a tough struggle in double overtime.Â
The game opened with some push from both sides. The Dinos had a strong start as third year forward Ryan Graham snared the lead at 11:11. The taste of success didn't last long, however, as Mount Royal's forward Jamal Watson came back with a goal of his own soon after.Â
They entered the second period with a tie of 1-1. Soon after the puck drop, Cougars' rookie defenseman Connor Blake snuck in a goal, his fourth of the season. The Dinos weren't about to let them have a victory lap - forward Tim Vanstone shattered their lead by scoring his second goal of the season with an assist from Sahvan Khaira. The two teams struggled for control of the ice, Calgary's goalie Matthew Greenfield defending his territory well. However, they couldn't stave off another Cougars offensive as Jesse Lees swept the puck in.Â
Third period opened with a Cougars lead of 3-2 as the Dinos strove to regain control of the ice. An early powerplay in favour of Calgary led to a quick snipe from forward Jordan Xavier, his third of the season. Cougars' Mitch Lipon crushed their lead within 10 seconds, sneaking Mount Royal back into a one point lead. The shootout continued as Calgary's Coda Gordon shot a goal past Cougars goalie, Wyatt Hoflin.Â
Facing a 4-4 tie, the game snuck into overtime with a tough battle for the win. In the final minute of the second round of overtime, Mount Royal's forward Chris Gerrie finally broke the stalemate to take the game. The Cougars walk away with a 5-4 victory.Â
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, hosted by Calgary, at 7:00 p.m. MST. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
