WSOC: Regina wins the day with 3-2 over Mount Royal

CALGARY - The two Cougar packs battled for control of the field on Saturday afternoon as the University of Regina was hosted at Mount Royal University. Regina took the game with a 3-2 win.

Regina gained the first advantage soon after the match began, attempting a shot on Mount Royal's keeper Miah Godek only to be thwarted by a swift save.

After 15 minutes of tough play, Mount Royal's Kaitlyn Clarke scored her first goal of the season with assistance from Talisa Tefledzuk, bringing the home team into the lead.

However, Regina pushed hard against the defenders in retaliation. Mount Royal showed a bit of resilience to the onslaught, but were slowed down by a yellow card. Regina's Taylor Bubnick took a well-aimed penalty kick which flew past Godek, bringing the game to a tie.

Both teams tried to find a lead before the whistle, but were unable to break the tie before halftime struck.

The second half began with several Mount Royal substitutions which earned them a shot on net within a minute. However, Regina retaliated by snaking around the defenses for a couple shots of their own. Both teams continued to be tripped up by foul calls, each striving for the upper hand.

After nearly ten minutes of stalemate, Mount Royal's Athena Fourlas finally broke the tie with a shot into the corner of the net, her first goal of the season.

Regina sought to fight back with some fresh legs following a couple substitutions. The tactic proved to be effective as Regina's Olivia Gables scored her fourth goal of the season, bringing the game back into a tie.

15 minutes before the final whistle, Mount Royal was on a break away with a sure shot on net, but Regina's keeper Kylie Bolton shot out of her net to block it at the last second. Regina pulled a similar move with 14 minutes to spare, bouncing the ball off the post and into the net, pulling into the lead.

Mount Royal was unable to regain the field before the final whistle called the game. They have another opportunity to break their streak of tough luck on Sunday, October 6th, against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The match will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
