WHKY: Cougars finish weekend on a high note

CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for their second match of the weekend on Sunday evening. Mount Royal came away with a 3-1 victory, elated with their success after facing a tough loss the previous night.

Both teams were in high spirits and ready to battle as the game began. Mount Royal was playing a harder offensive while the Huskies were being careful to defend their previous victory.

The Cougars soon earned their first goal of the night as forward Anna Purschke swept the puck into the corner of the net. As the first period closed, the Huskies were regrouping to close the gap.

Halfway through the second period, the Huskies left the net open on a penalty. The puck got away from them on an errant pass, skating all the way down the ice into the empty net. The goal was sustained and the Cougars rejoiced in their luck.

The Huskies quickly got their stride back as Bailee Bourassa shot a goal past Cougars' goalie Kaitlyn Ross just minutes after their previous slip. The Cougars immediately refocused their defenses in response.

The two teams began to get frustrated as a scuffle broke out in front of the Huskies net with eight minutes remaining in the second period, resulting in a Cougars penalty. The period ended with a Cougars 2-1 lead.

Third period showed some fierce rivalry as each team fought for control. Saskatchewan's goalie Camryn Drever was defending her territory, facing some tough offensive from the Cougars.

With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Purschke snuck in behind the Huskies powerplay efforts to score her second goal for the night, bringing the Cougars further into the lead.

Saskatchewan made a line change to initiate a fresh effort, but were facing some determined defenders. The Huskies pulled Drever for a final push to close the gap but were tripped up by a penalty with just seconds remaining.

The Cougars walked away with a victory of 3-1. The women's team will play again on Saturday, October 12th, against the University of Manitoba Bisons. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
