Two late goals leads Mount Royal past Lethbridge

Box Score LETHBRIDGE – In a match up of two teams at the opposite ends of the Pacific Division standings, Pacific Division leading Mount Royal Cougars needed two late second half goals to upend a pesky Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-0 in Canada West men's soccer action.

Dane Domic put away his fifth of the season in the 88th minute and Dawid Dueck scored in injury time to propel Mount Royal a four straight win and improve to 9-2-0 on the season. The loss drops the Pronghorns to 0-9-2

In a scoreless opening half, Mount Royal held a small advantage in possession and shots, but the Pronghorns limited the Cougars to only a handful of quality chances. Mount Royal attempted eight shots with five being on goal, while the Pronghorns attempted six shots but only two were on goal.

Off the opening kick, Cougar Miquel Da Rocha forced and early turnover and let a long-range shot fly that Pronghorn keeper Matt Vandervoort was able to get a piece of and deflect the ball into touch.

After the both teams traded unsuccessful set pieces from just outside the attacking penalty areas, Cougar Justin Anderson-Luch collected a ball at the top of the box and let go a low driving shot but Vandervoort was in the right position to make the save.

Freshman Landon Veluw had the Pronghorns best chance in the opening half. Stepping just inside 30-yards, Veluw let a shot fly, however he just curled the ball wide.

Mount Royal had some early pressure to start the second half but couldn't capitalize on shot from long range attempts and pair of corners. Mohamed El Gandour had the best look for the visitors, but his shot slid just wide of the right post.

Off a broken play in the Pronghorns penalty area, Dane Domic had a glorious chance to open the scoring in the 77th minute but his close-range shot sailed over the crossbar.

The Cougars kept pushing forward put struggled finding the mark as both David Dudek and El Gandour had good looks fly high over the crossbar

All the pressure the Cougars had in the second half paid off in the 88th minute. El Gandour streaked down the left side and laid a perfect ball to Dane Domic who slotted his fifth of the season.

With the Pronghorns pushing forward, Dawid Dudek took advantage and slipped in on a partial breakaway late in injury time to seal the Cougars win.

The Cougars will head to Saskatoon Sunday afternoon to take on the Huskies.
