CALGARY - The University of Alberta Pandas headed to Calgary for a home-and-home series against the Mount Royal University Cougars Friday. MRU came into the matchup having split games with Manitoba last weekend, while Alberta comes off a hard fought series against Saskatchewan.
The Cougars were first to strike as forward and assistant captain, Kate Hufnagel, found the back of the net six minutes into the first period. The goal was assisted by third year Cassidy Trotter and was Hufnagel's first goal of the season. Pandas goalie Kristen Chamberlin stopped every puck after that and finished the game with 11 saves on 12 shots.
At the other end of the ice, Alberta peppered Mount Royal with a consistent amount of shots all three periods. Cougars first year goalie Kaitlyn Ross was too much as she recorded a shutout with 25 saves. This is the Ross's first ever Canada West shutout and the second of the season for the Cougars.Â
This win puts Mount Royal to 3-2-0 on the season, one point ahead of the 3-2-0 Alberta Pandas. These teams will match up again tomorrow at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, AB. Fans can catch the action at 7:00 PM MST live on canadawest.tv presented by Co-op.
