WSOC: Griffins take the field with 7-1 victory

CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars were finally able to square off with the MacEwan Griffins after being delayed by a massive snowstorm in late September. The Griffins were hosted at the Mount Royal field Tuesday afternoon and took the game with a 7-1 victory.

The game began with a relentless offensive effort from MacEwan, finding four shots on net in the first ten minutes. However, Mount Royal's forward Athena Fourlas was able to skirt the Griffins' defenses and fire the ball into the net, just bouncing off the post.

MacEwan retook possession of the field, dominating the play and overwhelming Mount Royal's defensive line. They earned four shots on net before Salma Kamel finally snuck past the Cougars' keeper Miah Godek for the Griffins' first goal of the day. She scored a second goal just a minute later with the help of Suekiana Choucair.

As the game hit 30 minutes, MacEwan's Meagan Lemoine received a quick pass from Sarah Riddle and scored the Griffins' third goal of the day.

The remainder of the first half was slowed down by several fouls to MacEwan, including a yellow card. As the half closed, Kamel attempted one last shot on net but was blocked by Godek. The halftime whistle rang with a Griffins lead of 3-1.

The beginning of the second half was largely dominated by the Cougars as they fought to close the score gap. They earned several shots on net, holding the field for almost 15 minutes.

However, the Griffins' Maya Morrell found Kamel out front of the net alone, assisting a goal that brought the lead to 4-1. Just three minutes later, Griffins' Choucair nailed a penalty kick to score her fifth goal of the season.

Both teams substituted nearly their entire lines as the game entered its final 15 minutes. Fresh from the bench, the Griffins' Sunder West took the team's sixth goal of the game.

As the gametime waned, the Griffins dominated the remaining shots on net. With just ten seconds remaining, Kamel scored her fourth goal of the game, closing the match with a 7-1 lead.

These two teams will not meet again this season. However, Mount Royal will be hosted by the Manitoba Bisons on Friday, October 18th. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
