CALGARY - Both the Mount Royal University Cougars and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns were eager to make an impression as the weekend began. The Cougars managed to finally break their streak of bad luck as they took the field with a 1-0 victory.Â
The teams were showing some slow offensives in the first few minutes, but Lethbridge soon took the first possession. They managed to hold the field for a bit, but were overturned by the Cougars forward line.Â
Less than five minutes into the game, Cougars forward Jullien Ramirez scored her first goal of the season after a brief struggle in front of the Pronghorns net. Lethbridge soon retaliated with a couple shots of their own but were unable to defeat Cougars keeper Miah Godek.
Both teams were getting tripped up by several fouls, but regained their strides halfway through the match. Lethbridge was gaining several shots on net as they danced around the home team's defenses. They were keeping the play fresh with a few substitutions.Â
As halftime approached, the Cougars were gaining advantage of the field and defending their lead with fervor. Despite repeatedly travelling offside, they maintained control of the game until the halftime whistle.Â
The match resumed with a fierce offensive from the Pronghorns as they tried to retake the game. However, the Cougars were quick to dominate the play with the only shots on net for a full 15 minutes. Both teams were making several substitutions as the half progressed, levelling the playing field.Â
The Cougars were holding a strong defensive line which the Pronghorns just couldn't sneak through. They finally found a shot on net at the 76 minutes mark but were unable to make the target.Â
Mount Royal earned themselves a yellow card for delay of game with just ten minutes remaining. The Pronghorns managed to dominate the final minutes of play as the Cougars were struggling through several fouls. The game ended with one last attempt by Lethbridge to tie the game, but the shot flew high. They were awarded a red card for violent conduct as the final whistle blew.Â
The Cougars walked away with their first win of the season after a hard-fought battle. They will face off against the Pronghorns once more on Sunday in Lethbridge. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
