Mount Royal shuts out Huskies in Rutherford

SASKATOON – Mount Royal University goaltender Emily Severson made 29 saves in a 2-0 Cougars shutout over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in Rutherford Rink.

The rookie goalie made 13 saves in the first period, three in the second and another 13 in the third for her first career shutout. Jasey Book made 22 saves at the other end of the ice for the the Huskies.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-9-0. Saskatchewan drops to 7-5-1 with the loss.

After nearly two scoreless periods, Mount Royal was finally able to break the drought. Andrea Sanderson tallied at 17:28 in the second period on a tic-tac-toe play in front of Book.

Saskatchewan's two best opportunities to beat Severson in the game came in the first and third periods. Captain Kaitlin Willoughby missed on a breakaway opportunity in the first and the Huskies couldn't capitalize on a scramble in front of the net on a power play late in the final 20 minutes.

Anna Purschke added the empty net goal at 19:24 in the third to seal the victory.

The two teams will meet again Saturday in Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is at 5 p.m.
