CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars needed a late goal to defeat the Regina Cougars 1-0 at Cougars Stadium Field. Sarah Morley found the back of the net in the 84th minute for Mount Royal. Mount Royal has now won two games in a row.
Mount Royal had multiple chances to get themselves on the scoreboard in the first half, however Regina goaltender Ashton Lowry played exceptional. Lowry snagged an inside the box one-timer in the 38th minute and swatted away MRU's Emily Sands' breakaway attempt only three minutes later.
The second half saw both teams struggle to tilt the game in their favour. Both Cougar defences went into lockdown mode; rarely allowing any opposing offence to generate anything at all.
It took until the 84th minute for a team to get on the scoreboard. Mount Royal's Jolee Dangerfield delivered an exceptional pass to teammate Sarah Morley in the box. Morley struck the ball far side on Lowry, giving Mount Royal the late lead.
Mount Royal goalkeeper Miah Godek took care of the rest, stopping Regina's multiple attempts to tie the game, including a breakaway in the 85th minute.
With the victory, Mount Royal sits one game back of .500, sitting at a 2-3-0 record. Regina falls to 1-2-2.
Mount Royal will remain at home when the Saskatchewan Huskies come to Stadium Field tomorrow morning for an 11am start.
Regina will make the journey up to Edmonton tomorrow for a date with the MacEwan Griffins at 12pm.
