COUGARS LOSE HEART BREAKER TO WESMEN

Box Score

Calgary, AB- The opening game of the CougNation kick-off featured the now 2-3-0 Winnipeg Wesman who defeated the Mount Royal Cougars (1-2-0) by a final score of 1-0. Meaghan Lindsay's first goal of her university career proved to be the difference giving the Wesmen their first ever wins against their CIS West counterpart Cougars.

Mount Royal controlled the pace of the game early, hitting a post and sailing one just over the goal. The majority of the first half was spent in the Winnipeg end. but Wesmen goalkeeper Justina Jarmoszko was strong, turning away all six Cougar shots.
Those in attendance witnessed a competitive second half; the first scoring chance came in the 72nd minute when Cougar midfielder Amanda Schafer was fouled just outside the box. Schafer picked a spot on the left side of the net but Jarmoszko came up big keeping the match scoreless.
The Wesman broke the stalemate in the 79th minute when rookie Maeghan Lindsay struck a perfect shot into the top corner of the Cougars net, just out of the reach of Cougar keeper Meghan Prudhomme. The goal was Lindsay's first of her Canada West career in just her fifth contest.

Mount Royal fought tenaciously on offense for the remainder of the game trying to find a way to beat Jarmoszko. The attempts to equalize we all thwarted and Lindsay's goal proved to be the difference maker, giving the Wesmen their second win on the season.

"The ball came right to me and I thought 'I'm just going to hit it' I had nothing to lose so I just kicked the ball and it happened to go in," said Lindsay after the postgame celebrations. "I wasn't that anxious for my first goal, I thought if it happens it happens and if not then I guess not."

Mount Royal will attempt to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon as they play host to the Manitoba Bisons at 12:00pm at Cougars Stadium Field. Meanwhile the Winnipeg Wesmen will look to keep the momentum rolling tomorrow as they head up the QE-2 to take on McEwan University.
