Edmonton, AB - The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the MacEwan University Griffins, 74-62, in Canada West men's basketball action at the City Centre Campus, at MacEwan University. The Griffins fall to 0-1 on the young 2015-16 campaign.
The visiting Cougars jumped out to a quick lead and established an early double digit lead that they maintained throughout the first half. Mount Royal shot 41% for the first half, including a dazzling 46% in the first quarter. MacEwan University shot 26% for the first half.
The Cougars were led by Derek Wolf, Penticton, BC and James Lefebvre, Didsbury, AB with 10 points each. Lefebvre also led all Cougars, at the break, with six total rebounds.
Thadius Galvez, Ogden, UT led all Griffins with six points and Danzel James, Edmonton, AB led all Griffins with five total boards at the intermission.
At the start of the second half, Mount Royal continued to hit key baskets to build on their 15 point lead. The Cougars shot 65% from the floor in the third to expend the lead to a 23 point lead. The fourth quarter saw the home team Griffins come alive and out score Mount Royal by 11 to pull within 12 as the game ended. MacEwan University shot 37% in the fourth quarter.
Galvez led MacEwan University with a team high 12 points and Ryan May, Daysland, AB added 11 points as was named MacEwan University's player of the game. The Griffins captain pulled down seven boards and recorded four assists and steals. The team shot 31% from the floor for the game.
The Cougars were led by Wolf's 22 points as four different Cougars were in double figures. Lefebvre added 16 points, Brett Layton, Calgary, AB 11 points and Glen Yang, Hong Kong 10 points. The Cougars out rebounded McEwan University, 39-32 for the game.
The Griffins host the Cougars tomorrow night, at the City Centre Campus, at MacEwan University, game time 7:00PM MT.
