COUGARS LOSE HEATED AFFAIR TO THE WOLFPACK

Box Score

Calgary, AB – The TRU WolfPack remain perfect in 2015, defeating the Mount Royal Cougars 79-66 on Saturday night. Volodymyr Iegorov and Josh Wolfram led the WolfPack in scoring with 30 and 25 points respectively. Derek Wolf had 22 in a losing effort for Mount Royal.

The Cougars and WolfPack were both cold to start the game, not scoring a basket for the first two minutes of the game. However the scoring picked up in the latter minutes of the quarter as both sides pushed the pace up and down the court. The trio of Reese Pribilsky, Volodymyr Iegorov and Josh Wolfram had the Cougars lost in their own zone early, opening up a 22-13 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Cougars forward James Lefebvre routinely found himself matched up against Iegorov inside. Giving up more than five inches, Lefebvre found a way to get the job done, getting the big man off his feet and forcing him to commit fouls. However, on the offensive end, Iegorov proved very difficult to match up against. The Ukrainian-born captain had his way with the Cougars' defenders in the low post, scoring at will. TRU opened up a double-digit lead just four minutes into the second quarter.

With Wolfram out of the game, Glen Yang hit a deep three to get the Cougars within seven. Yang was on fire, scoring a career-high 17 points on the night. Despite Yang's stellar shooting, the Cougars weren't able to control Reese Pribilsky who had an answer each time they scored. At the half, Mount Royal trailed by ten, 40-30.

Mount Royal started the third quarter on a 7-4 run to get right back into the game. Derek Wolf and Glen Yang both hit three-pointers to shrink the deficit. After a quick run by the WolfPack, Derek Wolf led a fast break, then pulled up for a deep two, to cut the lead to 49-40. That was as close as the Cougars would come in the quarter as Josh Wolfram made three remarkable buckets in a matter of seconds to open up a 17-point lead. With the WolfPack up 16, a questionable foul call led to a technical foul on the Cougars' Ray Goff. Head Coach Marc Dobell voiced his displeasure and was given a double technical, sending him to the showers early.

Leading 67-43 to start the quarter, TRU kept the ball moving trying to work the clock. The Cougars remained persistent and tried to keep the score manageable. After a struggle for the ball under the Cougars' basket, Josh Wolfram caught James Lefebvre with an unintentional elbow that sent Lefebvre to the floor clutching his head. Fortunately for the Cougars, Lefebvre did return later in the quarter. Mount Royal got the game back to within 12 points, but that is as close as they would come. The WolfPack completed the weekend sweep of the Cougars winning the game 79-66.

TRU keeps their regular season record perfect at 4-0. Mount Royal drops to 1-3 in Canada West competition.

The Cougars will head to Kelowna for two against UBC Okanagan next weekend. Friday night's game starts at 8:00pm PST.

The Wolfpack will head home to host the MacEwan Griffins next Friday night at 7:00pm.
