Box Score Calgary, AB- In the second game of a back to back, the Mount Royal University Cougars earned their second win in as many days at Kenyon Court against the University of Regina winning 3-1 (20-25, 29-27, 28-26, 25-20). Tyler Schmidt was a difference maker for Mount Royal with 19.5 points helping his team stay undefeated while Joshua Nickel and Andre Borgeaud each scored 12.5 points in the losing effort for Regina.
The opening few minutes portion of the first set was evenly played with both teams taking turns trading points. But trailing 12-11, Regina turned their game on behind some strong serving from Brad Millers winning six straight points giving them a 17-12 lead. Regina held the lead for the remainder of the set, winning their first of the weekend by a score of 25-20.
Mount Royal gained back the momentum in the second set. Rallying back from a few missed opportunities and an early deficit due to service faults and unforced errors, Mount Royal played well winning six of seven points in the middle of the set to take a 22-19 point lead. Regina didn't give up and made a valiant comeback effort pushing the set into extra points. After trading a few points Mount Royal's Jordan Parkin and Tyler Schmidt made a few key kills, stifling Regina's comeback bid to give the home Cougars a 29-27 set win, tying the match.
The third set saw Schmidt continue his dominating performance for Mount Royal while on the other side Dalton Wolfe was a dig machine. The rest of the Regina team stole more than a few points by blocking Mount Royal spike attempts forcing extra points for the second straight game. Mount Royal fought off three straight possible Regina set points thanks to a few kills from who else, Tyler Schmidt, before winning three points in a row of their own to take the set 28-26, giving Mount Royal an opportunity to win the match in the fourth set.
And they took advantage. Mount Royal controlled the fourth and final set winning 25-20, taking the match 3-1, sweeping the weekend set in the process.
The win gives the Mount Royal Cougars their fourth win of the year to go along with a goose egg in the loss column. Meanwhile Regina's back-to-back losses against their provincial neighbors see them fall to 1-3 on the season.
Next weekend Kenyan Court will play host to a showdown of undefeated teams in a battle to remain on top of the Canada West standings as Mount Royal takes on the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Meanwhile Regina will also be in action next weekend playing a pair of home matches against the University of British Columbia.
